The Beethoven Frieze

  1. 1. Gustav Klimt.THE BEETHOVEN FRIEZE 1902
  2. 2. " Beethoven Frieze "- a series of paintings by Austrian artist Gustav Klimt, dedicated to the composer Ludwig van Beethoven. Paintings ,made in theform of architectural frieze , were shown for the first time as a part of"Association of Artists Vienna Secession" XIV exhibition in 1902.The theme of the frieze is based on Richard Wagners interpretation of the9th Symphony by Ludwig van Beethoven.
  3. 3. FIRST LONG SIDE WALL
  4. 4. Floating GeniiThe yearning for happiness (symbolized by the floating female figures of the firstpanel).
  5. 5. Suffering Humanity, Knight in Shining ArmorSuffering humanity (kneeling couple and girl standing behind them): their pleas to theknight in shining armor (the man in golden armor with a sword) as the external drivingforce, compassion and ambition (the female figures behind the knight) as internalmotivation moving him to take up the fight for happiness.
  6. 6. NARROW WALL
  7. 7. The Hostile Forces
  8. 8. The hostile forces. The giantTyphoeus, against whomeven the gods battle in vain(the monster with mother-of-pearl eyes extending acrossthe entire front wall with hisblue wings and snake-likeappendages); his daughters, the three gorgons (the threewomen standing to the left ofTyphoeus). Sickness, madness, death (the mask-like female heads above thegorgon heads).
  9. 9. Lasciviousness, Wantonness,IntemperanceLasciviousness, wantonness, intemperance (the group ofthree women to the right ofTyphoeus. Intemperancewears a conspicuouslyornamented blue skirt withapplications of mother-of-pearl,bronze rings, etc.). Gnawinggrief (the woman cowering onthe right in the picture). Theyearnings and desires ofhumankind fly past them.
  10. 10. SECOND LONG WALL
  11. 11. Floating GeniiPoetryThe yearning for happiness findsappeasement in poetry (thefemale figure with the lyre). Anempty segment in the friezefollows. This is where broadopenings in the wall revealed aview of the Beethoven stature inthe 1902 exhibition.
  12. 12. The Arts, Choir of Angels, and Embracing Couple
  13. 13. The ArtsThe arts lead us into an idealrealm, the only place where wecan find pure joy, purehappiness, pure love (the five Choir of Angelswomen, of which the upper Choir of angels in paradise. "Joy, thouthree point to the last scene gleaming spark divine. This kiss to the wholeillustrating Schillers Ode to world!" (concluding scene with womens choirJoy). and embracing couple).
  14. 14. ..".Frieze" occupies three walls and is about 34 meters length .The left composition "Yearning for Happiness", represented the golden knight, who isgoing against the forces of evil, with an accompany by two female figures ,symbolizingthe victory (Glory) with a wreath of the winner and Compassion. The central composition "Hostile forces"- is a force of evil. It consists of the severalparts: Tryphon is the central huge figure , three Gorgons are to his left , symbolizingsickness, madness and death, and female figures symbolizing lust, intemperance andlust are to his right . The lonely figure of a woman, symbolizing the gnawing anguish ofhumanity is apart from them .Composition on the right wall - "Art, Chorus of Angels Paradise " also consists ofseveral parts: figures symbolizing joy and wonderful Spark of God end
