The Reduit of Mainz-Kastel The word “reduit” has a latin origin and means isolated or withdrawn. In former times it was an impregnable fortress. The Reduit of Mainz-Kastel was built between 1830 and 1834 by the two engineers Franz Scholl and Christoph von Pittel. Today its inner courtyard is used for open air concerts and public viewing.
