  • 3. Issues Facing Journalism?
    • Find an issue facing journalism: look for a journalistic ethics question.
    • Study what was written about the situation.
    • See how the media handled the situation.
  • 4. Form an opinion on how you think the media behaved.
  • 5. Issues Facing Journalism?
    • What did the media do?
    • Did they do the right thing? Why?
    • How should they have handled the situation?
    • How could the media avoid future situations?
  • 6. Issues Facing Journalism?
    • Think about the newsworthiness criteria : is the event newsworthy? Is it timely, within proximity, relevant, etc?
    • Is it news?
    • What is the source? Is the source reliable?
    • Have other outlets handled similar situations in the past? Or even this time?
    • Did they follow the
    • principles of
    • journalism ?
  • 7. Things you need to do:
    • It starts by finding an appropriate topic (try the blog!) and explaining it.
    • Pose a question : “Should the media report on the extramarital affairs of politicians?”
    • Explain why it is an ethical dilemma.
    • Explain how the media handled the situation.
    • Discuss how the media has handled similar situations .
    • Discuss the newsworthiness criteria AND the principles of journalism .
  • 8. Offer your opinions about whether the outlets handled the situation properly, and if not, how you feel they should have handled it.
  • 9. Cite at least 3 sources. The first is where the ethical dilemma originates from.
  • 10. This needs to be 3 full pages. Plus a works cited page.
  • 11. In print in class. AND Through SafeAssign. Papers not submitted in hard copy in class are considered late.
  • 12. There are journalism ethics issues constantly. Try the poynter.org website that is linked on the blog.
