2. 2. About the Author

Cynthia Rylant was born on June 6, 1954 in Hopewell, Virginia. Her parents got divorced when she was four years old. She lived in a poor area, so she really had no idea what she would do after high school. She made a smart move and went to college, what is now known as the University of Charleston. Later on, she finished her masters degree in English at Marshall University. After college, she worked in the children’s section of the Akron public library. Cynthia read a lot of children’s books there. After being inspired, she became a professional librarian. She went to Kent State University in Ohio where she got her masters of library science degree. Cynthia’s first book was, “When I was Young in The Mountains.” In 1993, Cynthia donated her manuscripts to the library at the former college she went to, Kent State University. Many of her books were based on her life.

 5. 6. Synopsis

Harry Tillian loved his Papa. His Papa, Mr. Tillian, owned a candy and nut store. Harry started to dislike candy at the age of seven. After school, Harry always stopped by his Papa’s candy store. He and his friends bought candy at the store for a few cents everyday. Mr. Tillian always looked forward to seeing his son after school. Then, when Harry entered Junior High, Mr. Tillian felt lonely. Harry never had the chance of coming by his Papa’s store, so Mr. Tillian bought a parrot. He named the parrot Rocky. Mr. Tillian always talked to the parrot when he felt lonely. People stared at Mr. Tillian as if he were mad. Harry told his Papa to stop talking to the parrot, but Mr. Tillian ignored him.

Then one day Mr. Tillian received a candy shipment. He was ill and started to unpack boxes. He felt a sudden impulse and collapsed. A customer found him and he was taken to the hospital. Harry went to the hospital after school to meet his Papa. He promised that he would take care of Rocky and the candy store. He went to the candy store. He slowly picked up the spilled candy when he heard Rocky. Rocky started to say “Where’s Harry? Where’s Harry?” Harry understood what he meant and started to weep. Since he never went to the candy store, his Papa would wonder where Harry was. Harry was never there to accompany his Papa.
