2. 2. About the Author

Piri Thomas was born in 1928. He is currently 81 years old. He grew up in the ghetto city of Harlem in New York. He faced many challenges and he had to overcome his problems. He watched other kids as they

struggled to survive and rise above

the mean streets. 4. 4. Synopsis

In this short story, there are two seventeen year old boys who wish to be lightweight champions. They both want to go to the Golden Glove championships from their school. One day, they are taking their daily jog along East River’s Edge and decide not to see each other and train separately from now on; and they also claim that they will be friends even after the match. This creates a “wall” between them. In the Golden Glove championships there are wrestlers from everywhere for the same reason. Meanwhile, after spending some time in the waiting room, Antonio and Felix are escorted to the wrestling ring from two different stairways and walkways. They fight their hardest for something they both want, but before the announcer is about to call the winner they both leave the ring.

 8. 8. Critical Thinking

1.Why is boxing important to Antonio and Felix?

Boxing is a major part of Antonio and Felix’s life because they were born into boxing and focused on it their whole life.

2. Why do the boys decide to not see each other until the fight?

They don’t want to see each other because they want to forget about their friendship and isolate themselves from it. When they get into the ring they promise that they are going to play it fair and they don’t want to get emotional or anything. There will also be only one winner and they know that the outcome of this boxing championship will show that one of them is better then the other; and they will not be equal after the championship. They say that no matter what happens, they will still be friends.

3. How does the relationship help and how does it hurt the boys during the boxing tournament?

It helped the boys because if they were fighting with people they don’t know, then they would really want to win and they didn’t care for each other. They might end up really hurting each other and Antonio and Felix know their max and they wont get hurt. But this also hurts them because there will obviously be a winner and a looser and deep inside, it might enter their memory and get between them some day, a long time from now. I don’t know if they would get into an argument because of this event, but I do know that one of the boys could become sad because of this and that would alter the way they think about it.

 9. 9. Check Your Comprehension

1. What dream do the boy share?

Their dream is to be lightweight champions.

2. What event creates a wall between them?

The event that creates a wall between them was when they were jogging they started to talk about the fight.

3. Describe the way the boys leave the ring at the end of the fight.

At the end of the fight the boys leave right before the announcer presents the winner. The boys leave knowing that they are still “Amigo Brothers” and they knew that fighting wasn’t worth their friendship .
