  3. 3. What I already knew about this topic is... <ul><li>Kilwa was mostly Arabic </li></ul><ul><li>Kilwa was located on an island off the coast of Tanzania in east Africa </li></ul><ul><li>Houses were built with coral and sea stone </li></ul>
  4. 4. How Kilwa began… <ul><li>The island of Kilwa was sold to an Arab merchant </li></ul><ul><li>At first Africans did not get along with the newly arrived Arabs </li></ul><ul><li>Arabs were forbid from having settlements on the mainland </li></ul>

Kilwa’s Prosperity <ul><li>□ Resources flowed to Kilwa from the interior of Africa </li></ul><ul><li>□ Gold, copper, iron, coconuts, ivory, and rhino horn </li></ul><ul><li>□ They became rich by charging for trading to occur </li></ul><ul><li>□ Their peak was from the 1100s to the 1500s </li></ul><ul><li>□ Not all native ways lost to Islam religion </li></ul><ul><li>□ Under the rule of Ali al-Hasan, the Great </li></ul><ul><li>Mosque was built </li></ul>
