  • 1. Traveling Across the Regions Part One Mrs. Elliott
  • 2. Mrs. Elliott is on a mission to visit the US.
  • 3. She wants to tour fantastic places across the country, but she also needs to tell her husband, Tim, how far she has traveled. You see, she got a new car this summer and Tim is worried about putting too many miles on the car. Please help Mrs. Elliott figure out the distance by using map scale. This could keep her out of trouble.
  • 4. She will start in the Northeast region.
    • Look on the map and find the map scale.
    • What is it?
    • Figure out what tools you will need to measure the distance.
    • Talk with your table.
  • 5. Maine to Boston
    • Mrs. Elliott has always wanted to tour the Northeast. Her journey begins in Augusta, Maine and her first stop will be Boston, Massachusetts.
    • Please measure the distance for this trip.
  • 6. First Stop
    • From Maine to Boston is
    • 200 miles!
  • 7. Great Job! Keep moving.
    • Boston was so lovely, but now Mrs. Elliott is on to Albany, New York. New York is an interesting state.
    • Please find the mileage from Boston to Albany.
  • 8. Albany, New York
    • The distance from Boston to Albany is
    • About 150 miles!
  • 9. Amazing!
    • Now Mrs. Elliott wants to go Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to see the Liberty Bell. Please figure out how far it is from Albany, NY to Philadelphia, PA.
  • 10. Philadelphia, City of Brotherly Love
    • Philadelphia is a little over 200 miles. So about 210 miles.
  • 11. New York City
    • Before Mrs. Elliott leaves the Northeast, she has to go to New York City to see a Broadway show.
    • Find the distance between Philadelphia and New York City.
  • 12. On Broadway!
    • Mrs. Elliott feels like a star now!
    • The distance from Philadelphia to New York City is
    • 100 miles!
    • What a trip!
  • 13. Wow!
    • The trip around the Northeast was exciting. Figure out the total mileage for this part of Mrs. Elliott’s journey.
  • 14. Total NE distance
    • 660 miles
    • Now, Mrs. Elliott can tell her husband how to plan. Thanks.
  • 15. Time to Move On…
    • The Northeast was full of big cities, industry, and cooler weather. But now Mrs. Elliott is craving some grits and fried chicken. She is going south, ya’ll!
  • 16. Take a look at your map of the South.
    • Mrs. Elliott wants to visit the Washington Memorial and the White House. You know where she is going.. Washington, D.C.
    • From there she is visiting Atlanta, GA, home of the Coca Cola Museum. Find the distance from Washington, D.C. to Atlanta. Watch the scale on this map. It is different.
  • 17. Georgia on my mind
    • Mrs. Elliott loves her some Coca Cola, baby!
    • It took 450 miles to get to Atlanta from our nation’s capital.
  • 18. Where is she off to now?
    • After that yummy break in Atlanta, Mrs. Elliott wants to listen to some good ole’ country music.
    • She is off to Nashville, TN. Check out the distance from Atlanta to Nashville.
  • 19. Alan and Kenny.. Here she comes!
    • Country boys and girls getting’ down on the farm! Yeah, Nashville.
    • It took 200 miles to get here. Sing it, Vince Gill!
  • 20. Mrs. Elliott, country chick!
    • From Nashville to her next stop.. A place for cajun cookin’. She is off to Baton Rouge, LA.
    • Find the distance between Nashville and Baton Rouge.
    • (I think there is a song about Baton Rouge.)
  • 21. Cajun Cuisine
    • Spicy and delicious! The trip from Nashville to Baton Rouge is 450 miles.
  • 22. Calling Austin
    • Mrs. Elliott has the cutest son in the world named Austin. She thinks she should visit Austin, TX to honor him.
    • So, from Baton Rouge to Austin is how far?
  • 23. Austin
    • Not as cute as Austin Elliott… but pretty cool.
    • The distance from Baton Rouge to Austin is 375 miles.
  • 24. One last stop
    • Mrs. Elliott grew up in Florida. She can’t visit the SE without going to the beach.
    • Find out how far Austin is from Tallahassee, Florida.
  • 25. Florida at last
    • The trip from Austin to Florida was quite long.
    • It was 775 miles. What a beautiful sunset.
  • 26. Time to take a break.
    • Mrs. Elliott is ready to settle in at the beach and take a break for awhile.
    • Please total the mileage for her trip across the southeast. She will rest better knowing how far she has traveled.
  • 27. Lots of miles!
    • Her total trip across the South is 2200 miles.
    • She better make sure her car is in good shape before she starts again with her journey.
