The way in which my media product uses, develops or challenges forms and conventions of real media products <ul><li>In my research I looked at different music websites, advertising posters for music channels and double-page spreads in listings magazines, so that I could learn the forms and conventions of them. This has then given me ideas as to what I should put on my website, poster and double-page spread and what would be appropriate. </li></ul><ul><li>There were some conventions that I found which were used for all 3 products, this was to use bright, bold colours, to use simple and easy to read fonts and to use pictures which are close up of band/artists faces. </li></ul><ul><li>The first convention that I stuck to was the name which I gave my channel. All music channels used catching and witty names for instance MTV, which stands for music television. So I came up with the name Beatbox, which uses alliteration and it works because Beat is for the music part and box is a common name for a TV so therefore it works. </li></ul><ul><li>There were some which were only fitting for websites </li></ul><ul><li>The first convention of a website that I found and followed was to have the logo in the top left hand corner, I felt that this was an important convention because it is the first thing that you will see when looking at the website. </li></ul>
<ul><li>Then I found that they all had adverts on them, the most common places for this was to be either in the top right hand corner or to be lower down the page on either side. I also stuck to this convention and placed it in the top right hand corner as it was the only thing that I thought could be placed there. </li></ul><ul><li>The final convention which I stuck to was to have a row of hyperlink’s to the other pages on the website. I followed this convention as it is very important for the pages of the website to be easily accessed and easy to find. I also found that different websites used different ways to make it clear what page you were on. I also did this by using different colours for each page and the page which you were would have that coloured button. I also used roll-over images so that you knew which page you were going to go to. </li></ul><ul><li>I then found that that on each page their were article which were related to the page. Each article had at least one picture that went with it, with the writing to the side of it or underneath the picture. I followed this convention and tried to use both techniques so that my website flowed better. </li></ul><ul><li>There was a couple of conventions which I did not stick to. </li></ul>
<ul><li>I feel that this shows that I have tried to stick to the majority of the forms and conventions I found. The reason for this is because I believe that they are the most sufficient and popular way of doing things and therefore should be followed. I do believe that all 3 of my products show this and work extremely well together as well as alone. </li></ul><ul><li>The first convention which I did not stick to was to have a music chart on it. The reason for this was because I felt that if people wanted to hear the music chart then they would go on the music channel instead of the website so therefore challenged this convention. </li></ul><ul><li>The other convention which I challenged was to have other channels which relate to it mentioned on the website, the reason for this is because I didn’t want my channel to be related to any other channels. </li></ul><ul><li>I then looked at the conventions of advertising posters for music channels. </li></ul><ul><li>The first one I found was to have the logo in a hotspot or in the path of the eye. I stuck to this by </li></ul>
<ul><li>placing my logo in the middle of my page which is on the path of the eye. </li></ul><ul><li>The second was to use catchy phrases and wording. I used the phrase, “we bring the beat for your box” which links in with the name of the music channel so is very fitting. </li></ul><ul><li>I then did the same for the double-page spread of the listing magazine. </li></ul>
<ul><li>The first convention which I found was that the name of the magazine is placed in the top left hand corner of the page or in the bottom left hand corner. </li></ul><ul><li>The final convention that I found was to have a main block of writing on the left hand page and then to have different boxes with little pieces of information on the right hand page. I stuck to this because I thought that it was very eye catching and interesting. </li></ul><ul><li>All in all I feel that I have achieved my goal of finding and using conventions. Although there was a few conventions which I did not stick to but there was good reasoning for this and I felt that if I would have stuck to them conventions that my products would not have worked as well as they have. </li></ul>
The effectiveness of the combination of my main product and ancillary texts. <ul><li>My main product which is my website has a basic colour scheme which is a plain black background with a bright colour corresponding for each page which are red, green, blue and yellow. I have tried to use the four colours on each of my ancillary texts. I feel that it has worked extremely well on my double-page spread, and not quite so well on my double page spread, however I still feel that it has worked. The only part of the colour scheme which I didn’t use was to have a black background because I feel that this will be too dark for printed products so decided to use the more tradition white background, which works extremely well on my printed media products. </li></ul><ul><li>The next part is that I always used the same logo. This is a very simple thing because I always made the logo clear and visible meaning that once one product has been seen, if they see another one of my products they will know that they are linked to each other. Meaning that they work well together. </li></ul><ul><li>I also used the same some of the same images for my ancillary texts which I had created for my main product. The reason for this is because I thought that it would link them together because like the logo I decided that if the images had been since once and then seen again that the audience are then more likely to remember them </li></ul>
<ul><li>or link them with the other product. </li></ul><ul><li>I used the phrase “we bring the beat for your box” on all three of my products. I used the same imagery on the for this phrase on my poster and double-page spread. However I didn’t use the imagery on the website but still used the phrase. I thought that this would link my three products together because it is quite a catchy phrase and is likely to stick in your head. As well as writing it on the website it was also said in the video. I feel that this is very important because it could then also be used in other products such as radio adverts. </li></ul><ul><li>I believe that these things make my 3 products work together extremely well and promote the music channel extremely well. There are clear links between the products yet they are still able to fit their own conventions. All in all leading me to believe that my task has been achieved well. </li></ul>
What I’ve learnt from my audience feedback <ul><li>For my audience feedback I created a survey on formsite.com to see the survey which I created please click on the following link Audience feedback </li></ul><ul><li>For my audience feedback I created a survey on formsite.com to see the survey which I created please click on the following link Audience feedback </li></ul><ul><li>I asked 15 people to complete the survey all of which did so, the people I choose were a mixture of both male and female and were aged between 14-26 as this is roughly what my target audience was. </li></ul><ul><li>The results I got for my website which were mainly strongly agree for are the following statements; the colour schemes are appropriate, the reviews page is appealing, the competitions page is appealing, the pictures used on all 4 pages are appropriate. The statements that I got the majority of agree for were; the font used is appealing, the homepage is appealing, the news page is appealing. The statements which got mainly neutral was; the video is appealing. The feedback which I got back from the what do you think would improve the website is to use a more appropriate video, use a more exciting font, make the homepage a little more clearer and the website in whole could contain a little bit more information </li></ul><ul><li>This feedback for my website has taught me that my colour scheme is appropriate, the review and competitions page are both really good and that I have used the pictures well. As well as that I have also learnt that I could have used a different font </li></ul>
<ul><li>and made my homepage clearer and more interesting as well as the news page but not quite so much. I think that it has also taught me that my video is not that good, but I did think this prior to the audience feedback and it is the main thing which I would have changed. </li></ul><ul><li>The results from the advertising poster section of the survey which got mainly strongly agree are; the pictures on the poster are appropriate and appealing, the font used on the poster is appropriate and appealing. The statements which achieved a mainly agree answer were; the advertising poster is convention and appropriate. The statements which received a mainly neutral answer were; The advertising poster is appealing. The feedback which I received from the open question was mainly that it needs to include more information and to be more eye-catching. </li></ul><ul><li>These results have taught me that I made the right decision about my pictures and font which plays an important part of the poster as I found in my research that these are two important parts of the poster. It has also shown me that my poster has achieved its goal of being conventional but there are more things which could have been done to this. The improvements that I would make to my product would be to make it more appealing by including more information. I would also try to do something about the layout to make it more eye-catching as my results show that is what it needs to improve on. </li></ul><ul><li>The final part of my survey is based upon the double-page spread which I have created. The statements which received strongly agree are; the double-page spread is conventional, the pictures on the double-page spread are appropriate, the colours </li></ul>

The results which I got from my open question was that the font could be more interesting and that the double-page spread should maybe have something else on it and not be just about beatbox. </li></ul><ul><li>The results from my double-page spread has taught me that my double-page spread has worked extremely well. Some of the improvements which have been pointed out to me are appreciated as I do agree that my font could be more exciting but if I make it more exciting it could make it harder to read and less conventional which is why I choose that particular font as it’s hard to find a balance between the two but I feel that I have. </li></ul><ul><li>All in all I think that the audience feedback has shown me that all 3 of my products are good but there are still things that can be improved on all of them. I agree with this however I do feel that it is extremely hard to please everybody especially if you have a wide target audience. </li></ul>
The new technologies which I used in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stage. <ul><li>In my research and planning I used the internet to look up different music channel websites. I also, used youtube to look at what type of videos to put on the website. When I created my questionnaire I then used excel to create different pie-chart. I then used a camera to take pictures of people and props so that I can get an idea of where and what I should take picture of. </li></ul><ul><li>For the development of my products I used Dreamweaver to create my website, along with firefox to edit and create my pictures. I also used a Mac to edit some pictures as the software on a Mac is more proffesional. I also used publsiher to create my ancillary texts. For my video I used a video camera with HD, I then edited this on a Mac and put it on youtube so that I can put it on my website. </li></ul>
