    • 1. Do you give away copyright to IRC articles/papers?
      • IRC staff produces more than published online
      • 116 IRC article/papers in 2007
      • More possible with open access/ copyright than we think
      • Mandate as in the IRC statutes
      • Liberal versions in WASHCost contract with BMGF
    • 2. Articles and book used in local languages
      • “ I translated it in Gujarati language and shared it with my colleagues”
      • Source Bulletin article validates project in Mongolia (12 Feb 07)
      • Project in northern Nigeria benefits from reading Source Bulletin (03 Jan 07)
      • 'Keep it Working': great stuff and used in 180 villages (Papua New Guinea)
      • Three translated hygiene titles find new audience in Viet Nam (2005),
    • 3. Good: content staff writes a lot, but do not publish enough online
      • Articles/papers written by KDA/RCD and partly online in 2007: 64
      • Most online on other sites
      • KDA/RCD don’t know, nor register:
      • Source Bulletin thematic and IRC features written by DJ + KDA/RCD and 8 outside contributors and online: 39
      • Home page and theme page articles written by TvD/DJ and online: 13
    • 4. IRC statutes
      • Objectives and Resources. Article 3.2.b
      • making the available knowledge base accessible through documentation and information exchange and providing and carrying out training and advisory activities, in particular for sector organisations in developing countries ;
    • 5. BMGF WASHCost contract: Publication
      • Publication. You agree that you will make available to the public the results of the research emerging from the Project, including any data, tools, methodologies, guidelines, reports, publications , or other Project outputs funded by this grant (collectively, the "Materials"), and anticipate that the Materials will be published in a treatise, thesis, trade publication, or in any other format that is available for the interested public as soon as practical, consistent with the need to first secure intellectual property rights
      • in a manner that maximizes the benefits to developing world interests .
      • Specifically, you are expected to use good faith efforts and work in a collaborative fashion with your subcontractors and funders associated with the Project to facilitate broad dissemination and accessibility of the Materials in the developing world…..
    • 6. BMGF WASHCost contract: Global access and intellectual property
      • As a condition to making the grant, the Foundation requires that you will use good faith efforts to conduct and manage the research and Materials being developed or otherwise involved in this grant in a manner that enables
      • (a) the knowledge gained during the project to be promptly and broadly disseminated to the interested community and
      • (b) the intended Materials to be made accessible for the benefit of the people most in need within the developing countries of the world. The Foundation refers to this as Global Access. The Foundation recognizes that you have addressed how you anticipate achieving the Global Access objectives through descriptions provided in your Proposal.
    • 7. Art 11: staff contracts
      • Art 11: Intellectuele eigendom
      • Alle rechten, voortvloeiende uit de prestaties van Werknemer tijdens de uitoefening van zijn functie, die in Nederland of elders kunnen leiden tot het ontstaan van rechten van intellectuele eigendom (hierna: "Intellectuele Eigendomsrechten"), waaronder in ieder geval - maar niet beperkt tot - werken, tekeningen of modellen, foto's, video's, merken, handelsnamen, uitvindingen, computerprogramma's, know-how, publicaties en leersystemen komen toe aan IRC.
    • 8. Releasing copyrights to journals?
      • IRC staff releases copyright for articles/papers for commercial journals, such as Water Policy, Waterlines
      • Let’s develop a text to allow that only if we can publish paper also on our site, with notification to source
    • 9. Open Access to Peer-Reviewed Research
      • Two roads
      • " Golden road " - Open Access Journals , e.g.:
        • Drinking Water Engineering and Science (DWES)
        • Water Alternatives
        • Water SA
      • " Green road " - OA self-archiving - deposit digital document in publicly accessible website.
      • The author holds the copyright for the pre-refereeing preprint, so that can be self-archived without seeking anyone else's permission.
        • Green publishers - allow archiving pre-prints & post-prints (e.g. Elsevier)
        • Blue publishers - allow archiving of post-prints but not pre-prints
        • Yellow publishers - allow archiving of pre-prints but not post-prints
        • White publishers - no archiving allowed (e.g. IWA)
