Backups aren't exciting or glamorous. They don't make you money and there's no such thing as a valid backup. But, understanding your restores is exciting! Let me draw you a few pictures of database restores at their most ironic, entertaining, and even thrilling.

  • internal resources exhausted -- physically, skills etc.
  • backups get all the glory, but it’s restores that are important.
  • if you haven’t tested restores, you don’t know how long anything will take. mysql dump is like this.
  • datafile copies get all the imperfections of their parent
  • things you’re mitigating against
  • it doesn’t help to not notice this error for several hours either
  • fantastic use of regular expressions on log files allowed us parse out the import from the actual updates to the data
  • hardware poblem.
  • time is of the essence in these moements. and as we know very large datasets take a very long time to restore/recover/import
  • displeased with the bill, started a project to implement backups
  • we manually unloaded his data from datafiles and recovered most of it.
  • having backups won’t make solve all your woes, but it does provide options and
