T Y P E S     O F     S O C I A L     M E D I A ,[object Object],Websites such as Facebook and MySpace have revolutionised how we interact and communicate with one another. From the way we share content and news, to how corporation advertise new products, social networking sites have become the fore-front for new media advertising and consumption ,[object Object],In 2006 CNET Tech News reported that a new blog was created every half of a second. Blog hosting sites such as Wordpress and BlogSpot have given a voice to everyone on the internet, and have allowed for a new generation user generated journalism to emerge and let their voice be heard by their avid readers ,[object Object],Wiki-sites have allowed for a dynamic new delivery of encyclopaedic information to be distributed and edited by everyday users. Via the WikiMedia foundation, many special interest wiki-sites have been founded, giving even more information to these various following. With its opensouce licence, new wikis (and old) are visited and created everyday ,[object Object],Services such as the iTunes music store and blog-hosting sites have allowed for an eruption of new audio and video podcasting, giving the power to anyone with a microphone. Today, many podcasts have more viewers (or downloaders) than some prime-time radio shows
T Y P E S     O F     S O C I A L     M E D I A ,[object Object],Forums provide an open voice to a large community of people from any location around the world to discuss and debate various areas of interest, or one specific genre or idea. Due to the huge number of users and host sites, we can’t even find a rough figure for forum activity on the internet ,[object Object],Due to the huge online boom in user generated content, communities based certain of audio and visual (such as YouTube, flickr, deviantART and Newgrounds) have flourished and become huge media hubs, generating millions of views a month.  Benefit is that these websites offer a platform for distribution as well as a platform for improvement ,[object Object],So while blogging allows a large amount of users to post long and in depth discussions on topics they are interested in, microblogging sites (such as Twitter and Facebook’s Status Update) enable users to share brief, and commonly more personal, information about themselves. Though, in recent years, companies and celebrities have used these formats to promote their products and services

F U T U R E   O F   S O C I A L   M E D I A WHAT DOES THE FUTURE HOLD FOR SOCIAL AND WEB MEDIA? OLD MEDIA TAKES ON NEW FORMS Traditional as the news paper are in strong decline. Out of the twenty six most successful newspapers globally, only one (The New York Times) is showing any signs of growth. In a recent interview, the editor for the NY Times spoke of a new digital delivery that would “offer a daily update to anyone using an electronic data device, such as the new Apple tablet, for it’s users” This shift towards new media fronts for older media distributors is the only way they will survive.

NEW MEDIA PLATFORMS AND CONVERGENCE Current generation smart phone (such as the Blackberry Storm, Palm Pre, HTC Touch and the iPhone) offer a huge amount of versatility in usage and customisation through the use of vast catalogues of applications and services. The iPhone, in this respect, revolutionised the handheld market through the usage of a unified ‘App Store’ wherein users can upload and download (for free or at a minimal cost) applications for any number of tasks or functions. With this, handhelds like the iPhone are now able to perform tasks at levels previously available only to Desktop and Laptop users.

FUTURE OF WEB COMMUNICATIONS As many homebrew companies become corporations or gain corporate partnership (such as YouTube, MySpace, flickr) the internet’s content will be user driven, but with higher levels of production values and distribution awareness. When Web 3.0 does arrive, it will be powered by the imagination and perseverance of the average user. Net neutrality will never be more important.

  • 6. F U T U R E O F S O C I A L M E D I A WHAT DOES THE FUTURE HOLD FOR SOCIAL AND WEB MEDIA? OLD MEDIA TAKES ON NEW FORMS Traditional as the news paper are in strong decline. Out of the twenty six most successful newspapers globally, only one (The New York Times) is showing any signs of growth. In a recent interview, the editor for the NY Times spoke of a new digital delivery that would “offer a daily update to anyone using an electronic data device, such as the new Apple tablet, for it’s users” This shift towards new media fronts for older media distributors is the only way they will survive.

NEW MEDIA PLATFORMS AND CONVERGENCE Current generation smart phone (such as the Blackberry Storm, Palm Pre, HTC Touch and the iPhone) offer a huge amount of versatility in usage and customisation through the use of vast catalogues of applications and services. The iPhone, in this respect, revolutionised the handheld market through the usage of a unified ‘App Store’ wherein users can upload and download (for free or at a minimal cost) applications for any number of tasks or functions. With this, handhelds like the iPhone are now able to perform tasks at levels previously available only to Desktop and Laptop users.

FUTURE OF WEB COMMUNICATIONS As many homebrew companies become corporations or gain corporate partnership (such as YouTube, MySpace, flickr) the internet’s content will be user driven, but with higher levels of production values and distribution awareness. When Web 3.0 does arrive, it will be powered by the imagination and perseverance of the average user. Net neutrality will never be more important.
