It secures: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Safe working conditions </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Medical and Dental Benefits </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Pension Benefits </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Your Wages ! </li></ul></ul>
    • 6. Collective Bargaining – Your Contract! <ul><li>Your Contract Protect You! </li></ul>
    • 7. <ul><li>Each store has a Union Representative to: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Administer the contract, </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Represent you if you are subject to disciplinary action, </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Help if you have any problems on the job. </li></ul></ul>Representation
    • 8. Disciplinary Action <ul><li>You can not be terminated except for Good Cause . </li></ul><ul><li>Good Cause means that the company must prove actual wrongdoing in order to use disciplinary action </li></ul><ul><ul><li>This protects you from being fired unfairly. </li></ul></ul>
    • 9. Representation during Disciplinary Action <ul><li>If you are subject to discipline, you should notify the Union immediately </li></ul><ul><ul><li>213-487-7070 </li></ul></ul><ul><li>You may have to fill out a grievance form at the Union Office </li></ul>
    • 10. Grievances and Arbitrations <ul><li>When you file a grievance , your Union Representative will investigate your situation. </li></ul><ul><li>If the discipline was not justified, your case may go to arbitration after approval from a peer review board. </li></ul><ul><ul><li>In this case, your attorneys fees would be covered at no cost to you </li></ul></ul>

    • 12. Organizing Dignity and Respect on the Job. A Voice for workers. Expand the Union to include more members in new stores or new industries. (Marketshare)
    • 13. What is “Marketshare” <ul><li>More Union stores creates: </li></ul><ul><li>Level Playing Field </li></ul><ul><li>That means that your job and wages are safer. </li></ul>Market Share is the amount of union stores versus non-union stores.
    • 14. The Union Movement <ul><li>Many stores remain non-union </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Wal-Mart, Tesco, Bristol Farms… </li></ul></ul><ul><li>This affects YOU , because these stores compete with your stores. </li></ul><ul><li>We work to make sure that your jobs and wages are safe through </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Rallies and Demonstrations </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Developing Community support for your store </li></ul></ul>

    • 16. Community Support <ul><li>Recently, we helped prevent a Wal-Mart from coming to Inglewood. </li></ul>We are currently campaigning to stop the Tesco invasion.

The Per Capita Tax <ul><li>Approximately 28% of your dues goes to the UFCW International (Per Capita Tax) </li></ul><ul><li>The Per Capita tax is used to assist individual locals in need and to gain strength from an even larger base </li></ul><ul><ul><li>For example, the International paid out strike benefits to food workers during 2003 – 2004 supermarket strike. </li></ul></ul>
