Title – Dimension Films Presents on black background, it fades out and you hear Nicole Kidman speak 'Now children, are you sitting comfortably?, then I'll begin.' Violin music, then a picture appears of a picture out of a book, of a sunset over land. The woman starts to speak again, about the story. The camera slowly starts to zoom out as you see elephants and deer like animals. More credits appear over the picture. The music still plays and the women carry's on talking about the children' story. As the camera zooms out of the picture, a pair of children appear on the picture looking over the land, a boy and a girl. The picture is lit by what reflects as candlelight. The light goes out and moves onto another image, a picture of stairs in a old house, as the camera moves over the picture you see two children on the stairs, crouching down looking quite frightened. It blacks out again, and goes onto an image of a large lady, smiling and siting on a rocking chair, with the little boy scrubbing the floor around her feet and the little girl standing opposite her, talking. It then moves onto an image of a person holding a candle with one hand and a key in a door in the other. Then it goes onto a picture of the stairs, as the camera moves up the little girl is sitting their pointing and a women with a candle is walking towards her, the little girl looks like she is talking, There is than an image of a shadow on the wall, of a hand reaching down, it then goes down to see the little boy in bed looking very frightened, the next image is of a hand holding a puppet cross, the camera then follows the strings down to show the little boy attaches to them with wings and a white robe, like an angel. The last image is of a house, a large, old house with vast green area surrounding it, a lake in front and trees behind. All these images are drawn, like out of a book, in black and white pencil. The image of the house then transforms to a real life image, in colour and by film. A note comes up on the bottom; Jersey, The Channel Islands 1945. It then skips to shot of a close up of a womens face screaming, it is very sudden and makes you jump. The womens expression, shows she is very distressed and scared.
The genre of the film is pshycological thriller, I think this is very identifiable in the first few minutes of the film as the images are very creepy, and supernatural. The music is very light however it does create a intense mood. The jump to the women screaming definatley shows the genre of the movie, it is very unsettling and unexpected.
