    • Illuminated Manuscripts
      • An illuminated manuscript is a manuscript in which the text is supplemented by the addition of decoration (in the letters, borders, or miniature illustrations).
      • Earliest surviving illuminated manuscripts are from the gothic period (400-600 ce) primarily in Ireland, Constantinople, and Italy.
      • The majority of surviving manuscripts are from the Middle Ages.
      • The majority of Illuminated Manuscripts are religious in nature (often created by Monks).
      • The Process is long and expensive so only the wealthy could afford them.

      • x = height of the body of the letter
      • b = baseline
      • d = descender finishes
      • Nib = writing end of the quill
      • Quill = the head of a calligraphy pen
