The Solar System

 1. 1. SOLAR SYSTEM By: Daniel and Justin
 2. 2. THE PLAN ETS!

The solar system has 8 planets. They are in order:

Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto . There used to be 9 planets but there are now 8 because Pluto is now classified as a dwarf planet.

 3. 3. Inner & Outer Planets

The inner planets of the Solar System are Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars. The Sun also counts as one. They are the inner planets because they have dense, rocky compositions, few or no moons, and no ring systems.

The outer planets of the Solar System are Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. All of these planets have ring systems and have moons . E.g. Jupiter has 64 known moons .

Pluto is an ex. Planet. Due to it’s size astronomers called it a dwarf planet.

 4. 4. Earth

One of the inner planets of the Solar System.

Largest terrestrial planet.

71% of the Earth is covered with water.

Remaining contains of continents and islands.

Interacts with the Sun and the Moon.

Moon is Earth’s only natural satellite.

 5. 5. Mars

Inner planet and fourth away from the Sun.

Reddish appearance due to iron oxide on its surface.

Terrestrial planet with a thin atmosphere.

The highest mountain known in the solar system, Olympus Mons, located on Mars.

Earth about 10 times as massive.

Water cannot exist because of its present low atmospheric pressure.

Soil is slightly alkaline and contains vital nutrients such as magnesium & potassium.

Weather is most like Earth.

 6. 6. The Asteroid Belt

Region of the Solar System roughly located between orbits of Mars & Jupiter.

Occupied mostly with asteroids or minor planets.

More than half of the mass contains the four largest objects in the asteroid belt, Ceres, Vesta, Pallas, and Hygiea.

Ceres is the only dwarf planet in asteroid belt.

Ceres discovered by Italian monk Giuseppe Piazzi.

 7. 7. Neptune

- Outer planet and the eight planet from the Sun.

Fourth largest planet and third largest in mass in the Solar System

Mass is 17 times Earth’s mass.

Planetary ring system.

Weather is characterized by extremely dynamic storm systems.

In 1989, the Great Dark Spot on Neptune was discovered by Voyager 2.

The Great Dark Spot is a anti- cyclonic storm system.

There are two other storm systems on Neptune, The Small Dark Spot and The Scooter.
