  1. 1. GRAPHICS
  2. 2. VECTOR VS BITMAP IMAGES Vector images are made up of mathematically determined points, curves, lines and polygons. Bitmap images on the other hand are made up of a grid of dots called pixels. These all contain colour information. BITMAP VECTOR
  3. 3. GIF vs JPEG IMAGES GIF images support 256 colours and so makes it suitable for use in most forms of media excluding photo’s. JPEG on the other hand supports 16.7 million colours and so it much better suited for use with photos. A problem with JPEG images is that the compression algorithm throws out information and so some of the date is lost. GIF files are best suited to logos, line drawings and icons whereas JPEGs are best suited to pictures,
  4. 4. WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN EMBEDDED GRAPHICS AND LINKED GRAPHICS Embedded pictures are present in the Microsoft word programme. This is the default image. With embedded images the size does not matter and can be moved in between files. Linked graphics are from an external source and the size can be altered.
  5. 5. WHAT IS A COLOUR PALETTE A palette is a system which enables you to view a set range of colours. Each palette has a specific number which can be used in pixels to portray their colour. A colour palette is a set collecting of colours which are used in pixels It is made up of 256 solid colours. An example of a small palette file is a GIF file which store 4 or 8 bit index. An example of a large palette file is TIF and JPEG files. These store 24 bit index.
  6. 6. LOSSLESS COMPRESSION As the name implies Lossless Compression is the compression of data without loss of information. Lossless Compression is a type of data compression algorithm. JPEG’s however do not use this type of compression.
  7. 7. PNG FILES The FBS wiki on PNG or Portable Network Graphics files says that it overcomes many of the problems with GIF and JPEG files, but does not support animations.
  8. 8. WHAT IS BAD ABOUT BMP'S BMP’s are very large files which is bad when storing them. This therefore makes them bad for uploading, saving, and sending. This type of file is now very rarely used with JPEG’s taking over as the most common ones.
  9. 9. WHAT IS FLICKR Flickr is a networking website for uploading pictures and blogging, similar to Myspace. Someone might use it to share pictures with friends. This site is however purely recreational as there does not appear to be any way of using it for academic purposes.
