  • 1. Why am I Unique? Understanding how we are different and how very much we are alike; even though we come from different cultures and traditions!!!
  • 2. What is Culture? <ul><li>Culture is defined as … </li></ul><ul><li>The sum of attitudes, customs, and beliefs that distinguishes one group of people from another. </li></ul><ul><li>Culture is transmitted, through language, material objects, ritual, institutions, and art, from one generation to the next. </li></ul>
  • 3. What are Traditions? <ul><li>Tra·di·tion   The passing down of elements of a culture from generation to generation, especially by oral communication. </li></ul><ul><li>A mode of thought or behavior followed by a people continuously from generation to generation; a custom or usage. </li></ul>
  • 4. How are my traditions similar to my classmates?? <ul><li>We are all different especially here right were we live! </li></ul><ul><li>Texas was once owned by Mexico long before it was one of the states; so the Mexico-US boarder is not that far away </li></ul><ul><li>therefore Texas is very much influenced by the Mexican Culture. </li></ul>

How does my Culture affect my every day life? <ul><li>Our religious beliefs are affected </li></ul><ul><li>Our eating habits </li></ul><ul><li>It determines the holidays that we do celebrate </li></ul><ul><li>It affects our dressing habits </li></ul><ul><li>Our table manners </li></ul><ul><li>Our speaking mannerisms </li></ul>
  • 6. Culture is all around us!!

Teks <ul><li>(2) For Kindergarten students whose first language is not English, the students' native language serves as a foundation for English language acquisition. </li></ul><ul><li>(2) Listening/speaking/culture. The student listens and speaks to gain knowledge of his/her own culture, the culture of others, and the common elements of cultures. The student is expected to: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>(A) connect experiences and ideas with those of others through speaking and listening (K-3); and </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>(B) compare language and oral traditions (family stories) that reflect customs, regions, and cultures (K-3). </li></ul></ul>
