• Outward Bound

    1. 1. Exploring team development Task 4 Teams and Leaders
    2. 2. Clans

The Clans are set out like groups.

Each clan is a different team eats, sleeps and are in teams together.

In your clan you work together to complete all tasks, objectives and any long term goals you have together.

    3. 3. Working in your clan

With your clan you work together in all your tasks.

Your activities are set out for you and there are a three main stages you follow, these stages are :

Stage 1-Planning

Stage 2-Conducting

Stage 3-Reviewing

    4. 4. Following the stages

Stage 1- Planning

With your Clan you all have a fair input on how you are going to complete your task and together choose the best idea/strategy that suits the task in hand.

There will be a selected leader that will make the final decision independently and doesn’t always have to agree with the majority of the team.

    5. 5. Following the stages

Stage 2 – Conducting

After fully planning out the task it is time to put your planning to the test.

During the task each clan member will have an individual role to play.

Judged on their ability and skill depends what they will be doing and how big their contribution will be.

It is up to your clan to motivate and make sure each member is assigned to a specific section in the task and it is up to the team to make sure everyone tries their best throughout the course.

    6. 6. Following the stages

Stage 3-Reviewing

This is one of the most important stages .

This allows you to find out each team members strengths and weaknesses. After each task every clan should discuss and analyse their strengths and weaknesses.

This allows you to work on your weaknesses and develop your strengths. From this your team will now be able to plan better for the next task because your clan will know what each member does best.

    7. 7. The wall During my time at outward-bound my clan followed each of these three stages as best we could. We planned out and together we came up with the best strategy for the task. We planned to have two people at either end of the wall, two lifting the people and two pulling them up. We then reviewed the task and were all pleased. We found that this was because throughout the task we had good communication and motivation so we used this in all our other tasks.
    8. 8. Keeping on track.

Each clan had a time table for everything they did:

Eating, sleeping, tasks and meeting.

By sticking to these time schedules each clan was prepared for the task to follow. This made all objectives clear and therefore easier to complete. We had to keep to a tight schedule so that all objectives could be met and each member of the clan new what the team had to do and what they had to individually do.

    9. 9. Measuring performance

At the start of the course everyone was given team roles,

The different roles represented different abilities in a person , this was a good way of working out who was doing what in the tasks.

There are also members opinions that help to monitor peoples progress and performances.

    10. 10. Conclusion

Overall I feel outward bound is a good once in a life time experience.

It helps to develop people and changes them for the better.
