1 Conformities
1.1 Standards, directives and
regulations
The construction and operating behaviour of the
Buderus ERC controller as well as Buderus wall-hung
gas boilers meet the ‘basic requirements for gas units
directive 90/396/EEC’ and the standards DIN 4702-6,
EN 483, EN 676 and EN 677.
For an extensive list of all standards and directives taken
into account, please see the installation and
maintenance instructions of the subject wall-hung gas
boiler.
1.2 Designation
F The Buderus ERC controller and wall-hung
gas boiler meet the basic requirements of
the relevant standards and directives.
Their conformity has been proven.

2.1 Safety instructions
2.1.1 Clarification of the symbols used in the
safety instructions
This operating manual uses the following symbols as
safety instructions for the user:

life of personnel. Non-observance of such an
instruction may lead to death or serious injury.
ACAUTION!
This symbol indicates risk of injury to the user.
It provides important information concerning the
professional handling of the wall-hung gas
boiler. If these instructions are not observed,
such may lead to functional faults in the
wall-hung gas boiler and injury to the user.
2.1.2 Concerning the safety instructions
All the safety instructions in this installation and
maintenance manual must observed.
2.1.3 Procedure if gas can be smelled
ADANGER!
If gas is smelled near your wall-hung gas boiler
or in your house, there is a risk of explosion and
the occupants are in mortal danger. If you smell
gas, follow the procedure below:
- Extinguish any fires, open flames
and/or cigarettes!
- Avoid creating sparks!
Do not use any electrical devices - not
even your phone, wall sockets or doorbell!
- Close the main gas shut-off valve!
- Open all windows and doors!
- Alert all other occupants and have
them leave the building!
- Go to a telephone far from the building

3.3 Allowable users
3.3.1 Specialized personnel
‘Specialized personnel’ are persons:
- who are familiar with the wall-hung gas boiler
installation based on their professional occupation
and experience,
- who are familiar with the relevant official work-safety
regulations, directives and generally recognized
technical rules (for example VDE stipulations,
DIN sheets) so that they can judge whether the
relevant installation is in a work-safe condition.
Specialized personnel should be asked to give their
objective opinion as seen from the viewpoint of safety on
the job, unaffected by commercial or economic
conditions.
3.3.2 Lay personnel
‘Lay persons’ are persons who are not a specialized
professional. Lay persons may use the Buderus wall-
hung gas boiler without limitation; however, they may
not carry out any activities connected with the wall-hung
gas boiler’s installation, ignition, maintenance or
removal.

4 Product description
4.1 Functions of the ERC controller
The ERC controller is suitable for controlling the room or
outdoor temperatures of wall-hung gas boilers provided
with UBA, modulating burner, and a heating circuit
without mixer and for preparing hot water.
The ERC controller has the following functions:
z One-channel switching clock with week programme;
z Automatic summer/winter conversion (only possible
if supplied with outdoor-temperature model AM 1.0);
z Hot-water preparation 30 minutes before and after
the heating operation;
z Hot-water priority circuit;
z Holiday programme;
z Heating pause;
z Heating-period extension (party function);
z Frost-protection function;
z factory basic adjustments (standard or default).
In case of power failure, the time and day of the week
remain stored for a certain period. All other adjustments
have been permanently stored.
4.2 Intended use
 Ask your specialized heating company to provide you
with extensive information on how to operate the
installation.
The ERC controller has been designed as an entry,
control and regulation unit mainly for use with Buderus
wall-hung gas boilers for detached and terraced houses.
The ERC controller can be used for two different
applications:
z Room-temperature control;
z Outdoor-temperature-dependent control.

The latter application requires the outdoor-
temperature module AM 1.0 and an outdoor-
temperature sensor.

4.4 Operating elements, operating levels
All functions and adjustment values are indicated or
adjusted in the clear operating field.
4.4.1 First operating level
At the first operating level (fig. 1) there is a temperature
rotating knob for adjusting the room temperature. Temperature rotating knob

Using the push-button ‘- Auto +’, room-temperature
changes of short duration can be adjusted in automatic
mode (see “Provisional adjustment for short duration” on
page 21). Such short-duration room-temperature adjust-
ments will be later cancelled by the next switching time.
The display shows the standard value of the current day
of the week, the time and the measured room tempera-
ture.

programme’, fig. 4) has been installed. This programme

Explanation:
Each adjusted room temperature is specified as a target
value of the listed times: for instance, as from Monday at
05:30 hrs the installation will heat to a room temperature
of 21 °C, after which it will reduce the temperature to
19 °C as of 09.00 hrs, etc.
Should the factory programme not correspond to your
heating habits, you may adapt the heating programme to
your wishes at any time.
4.6 Danger zones
AWARNING!
There is a danger of scalding if the hot water is
too hot. Always open the cold-water faucet first
and then ad hot water as required.
Frost protection
J NOTE!
If the wall-hung gas boiler is active, the frost
protection is active.
Before deactivating the wall-hung gas boiler
installation using the operating switch on the
wall-hung gas boiler, check whether frost is
expected.

5 Operating the basic functions
5.1 Commission
On commissioning the ERC controller, observe the
extensive instructions in the operating manual:
z for the wall-hung gas boiler;
z for the controller (these instructions).

If a hot-water facility has been installed on your
heating installation, then hot water will be
heated with priority. When there’s no longer a
demand for hot water, then the living area will

5.2 Adjusting the current day of the
week and the time
The heating programme is based on the day of the week
and the time. The heating installation must therefore be
set to the current day of the week and the current time.
The following table indicates the abbreviations used for
the days of the week:

Assume it is 16:30 hrs on a Monday. Then proceed to
adjust as follows:
 Open the cover (second operating level).
 Press the ‘Tag’ key (fig. 5) and keep it pressed.
 Turn the rotating knob until ‘MO’ for Monday is shown
on the display.
 Release the ‘Tag’ key to store the day.
 Press the ‘Zeit’ key and keep it pressed.
 Turn the rotating knob until the correct time is shown
on the display (e.g. 16:30).
 Release the ‘Zeit’ key. The time is stored.
J After a power failure, both day and time will
blink.

button once.
If the blinking indication does not respond to the current
day of the week and time, repeat the adjustment
procedure.
Once you have carried out all operating steps and the
temperature rotating knob is on ‘Auto’, the heating
operation is started on the basis of the factory
programme.

5.3 Selecting the operating mode
Use the ‘heating’ key to adjust the wall-hung gas boiler
installation to the following operating modes:
An = winter mode (room and water heating activated)
Aus = summer mode (only water heating activated)
Auto = Automatic conversion between the summer/
winter modes. The heating installation
automatically recognizes when the
room-heating function can be deactivated
(see “Adjusting the summer/winter conversion”
on page 28).
J NOTE!
The position ‘Auto’ is only possible if the
controller has been provided with an outdoor
temperature module AM 1.0 (Fig. 6) and if on
the module AM 1.0 a selection has been made
for heating operation with outdoor temperature
guidance.

5.4 Programming the heating
switchpoints
The section “Default adjustment” on page 14 presents
the standard programme and clarifies it.
This programme can be tailored to your personal
requirements.
The programme is made up of several heating switch-
points per day for all days of the week. These heating
switchpoints can be recorded by fully arbitrary ‘switching
points’.
It is also possible to specify individual room tempera-
tures; for this, see “Adjusting the target room-tempera-
ture” on page 21.
5.4.1 Changing a switching point
For instance, from Saturday 07:00 hrs to Saturday
08:30 hrs
 Open the cover.
 Turn the rotating knob (fig. 8) until the display shows
‘SA 07:00 21.0 °C’.
 Press the ‘Zeit’ button and keep it pressed.
The time display will blink.
 Turn the rotating knob until the desired time (08:30)

have disappeared, the switching point will not
have been deleted.

5.5 Adjusting the target room-
temperature
You can choose between various possibilities for
adjusting the target room-temperature:
z Provisional adjustment for short duration;
z Changing the default adjustment for permanent
adjustment.
5.5.1 Provisional adjustment for short duration
Changing the room temperature using the
‘-/Auto/+’ -key
The temperature rotating knob must point to ‘Auto’.
The indicator lamp ‘Auto’ will be active.
Use the ‘-/Auto/+’ -key (fig. 12) to provisionally change
the room temperature.
 Press the ‘+’ or ‘-’ key.
The display will show the changed room
temperature.
You can increase or reduce the room temperature by a
maximum of 2.5 °C.
The change will be cancelled when passing the next
automatic switching point.
J NOTE!
If all indicator lamps are off, the control will be in

Manually adjusting the room temperature
J NOTE!
Use the manual adjustment to deactivate
automatic mode.
 Adjust the temperature rotating knob (fig. 13) to the
desired room temperature (above 6 °C).
The indicator light ‘Man’ will become active. The wall-
hung gas boiler is now carrying out its heating operation
in winter mode (room and water heating) continuously
using the adjusted room temperature.
If you set the room temperature lower than 16 °C,
operation will go down to night level. In addition to the

become active. The water heating will then be off.
Back to auto mode:
 Turn the temperature rotating knob to ‘Auto’.

5.6 Adjusting the water temperature
5.6.1 Buderus wall-hung gas boiler with built-in
hot-water tank
Using the ERC controller you can adjust the hot-water
facility to the following operating modes:
An = The hot water is continuously heated.
You will have hot water available at all times,
even during low-operation periods.
Aus = Water is not heated.
Auto = Hot water is prepared only in day mode.
In night mode and during the holiday
programme, the hot-water facility is
deactivated.
 Press the ‘faucet’ key (fig. 16) and keep it pressed.
 Turn the rotating knob until the desired adjustment is
shown on the display.
The factory adjustment of the water temperature is
60 °C.

J NOTE!
In the case of a built-in tank, the water
temperature has been permanently adjusted.
It is not possible to change it.
5.6.2 Buderus wall-hung gas boiler with separate
hot-water tank
D LITERATURE!
In the case of a separate tank or built-in direct
water heater, the water temperature can be
adjusted at the second level of the UBA auto-
matic ignition device (see the documentation of
the wall-hung gas boiler).

5.7 Resetting to the default values
To reactivate the standard programme:
 Simultaneously press the ‘INS’ and ‘C’ keys (fig. 17)
and keep them pressed until all numbers have
disappeared from the display. Zeit
Once the keys are released, all previously entered
switching points will have been deleted.
The factory programme will have been reactivated.

6.1 Adjusting summer/winter time
 Open the cover.
The display will show the day of the week, the current
time and the actual room-temperature value.
 Press the ‘Zeit’ button (fig. 18) and keep it pressed.
 Turn the rotating knob clockwise or anticlockwise,
depending on what you want to set: winter or summer
time.
 Realise the further adjustments as listed in “Adjusting
the current day of the week and the time” on page 17.
6.2 Holiday programme

6.2.1 Adjustment
During your holiday you might set the room temperature
lower. Let’s assume you have 15 days of holiday: in this
period the room temperature should be 10 °C day and
night.
 Press the ‘Urlaub’ button (fig. 19) and keep it
pressed.
 Use the rotating knob to set the number of holidays
to 15.
The day of adjustment is regarded as the first day of the
holiday.
 Press the ‘Temp’ key and keep it pressed.
The default room temperature is 16 °C.
 Use the rotating knob to adjust the room temperature
to the value that must be observed during your
holiday, in this case 10 °C.
 Release the ‘Temp’ key. Your holiday and the room
temperature have been stored.
If the warm-water preparation ‘WW-Auto’ is set, then in
the holiday period no warm water will be prepared since
a room temperature lower than 16 °C has been entered

6.2.2 Cancelling the holiday programme
 Press the ‘Urlaub’ key and keep it pressed.
 Use the rotating knob and continue to turn the button
anticlockwise until ‘00’ is shown on the display.
 Release the ‘Urlaub’ button.
The automatic programme will be active again.

6.3 Heating pause
6.3.1 Alignment
In order to save energy you can set the ‘heating pause’
if a low room temperature will be adequate for the next
brief period, until the next switching point.
J NOTE!
If the hot-water preparation has been adjusted
to ‘Auto’, during the heating pause also the
heating of hot water will be deactivated.
 Press the ‘Pause’ key (fig. 20) and keep it pressed.
 Turn the rotating knob until the desired time for the
end of the pause is indicated, e.g. 15:30 hrs.
The display will show blinking time alternated by the
ending time of the pause and the day-night conversion
temperature of 16 °C.

6.3.2 Cancellation
If you want to prematurely terminate the heating pause:
 Press the ‘Pause’ key (fig. 21) and keep it pressed.
 Turn the rotating knob anticlockwise, until the current
time is displayed,
or
 Keep the ‘C’ button pressed until all numbers on the
display have disappeared,
or
 Briefly turn the temperature rotating knob away from
‘Auto’ and then return it to ‘Auto’.

6.4 Party mode
6.4.1 Adjustment
Using the party function you can provisionally extend the
day mode, e.g. up to 01:50 hrs.
J NOTE!
You can set a provisional extension of the
heating period. Once the extension period has
ended. the system will automatically return to
the previous programme.
 Press the ‘Party’ button (fig. 22) and keep it pressed.
 Turn the rotating knob until the desired end of the
party is displayed, e.g. 01:50 hrs.
 Release the ‘Party’ button.
The display will show the blinking time alternated with
the time when the party ends. The room temperature of
the last switching point will be shown.
If you desire a different room temperature:
 Press the ‘Temp’ key and use the rotating knob to
adjust the desired room temperature.

6.4.2 Termination
If you want to prematurely terminate the party mode:
 Press the ‘Party’ key and keep it pressed.
 Turn the rotating knob anticlockwise until the current
time is displayed,
or
 Keep the ‘C’ key pressed until all numbers on the
display have disappeared,
or
 Briefly turn the temperature button away from ‘Auto’
and then return it to ‘Auto’.

6.5 Adjusting the summer/winter
conversion
6.5.1 General
J NOTE!
The summer/winter conversion is only possible
if an AM 1.0 has been installed and adjusted to
outdoor-temperature-driven heating operation.
The ERC controller takes into account the residual heat
of the building and in case of outdoor-temperature
fluctuations activates and deactivates the heater system
after a certain delay.
Example for spring:
In spring, when the building is still cold, the controller will
not deactivate the wall-hung gas boiler until the outdoor
temperature has been above the conversion tempera-
ture for a certain time.
Example for autumn:
In autumn when the building has still retained heat, the
residual heat will be taken into account and the
wall-hung gas boiler will not be deactivated until the
outdoor temperature has been below the conversion
temperature for some time.
6.5.2 Adjusting the automatic conversion
The factory adjustment for the summer/winter
conversion temperature is 17 °C.
Proceed as follows to change it:
 Press the ‘heating’ key (fig. 24) and keep it pressed.
The display will show ‘auto’, the conversion
temperature and the room temperature.
 Turn the rotating knob until the outdoor temperature
is displayed below which your wall-hung gas boiler
should heat, e.g. 20 °C.
 Release the ‘heating’ key.
The value has been stored.

7 Operating the plug-in modules
The ERC controller may have been provided with or can
be expanded with four plug-in modules:
1. Outdoor-temperature module AM 1.0
2. On-line module OM 1.0
3. Barometer module BM 1.0
4. Hygrometer module HM 1.0
7.1 Outdoor-temperature module AM 1.0
The outdoor-temperature module is required if you want
to operate your wall-hung gas boiler using outdoor-
temperature-driven heating operation. You have the
following three different operating possibilities:
z Room-temperature-driven heating operation;
z Outdoor-temperature-driven heating operation;
z Outdoor-temperature-driven heating operation with
room-temperature activation.
The selection of these adjustments is made using the
‘Control’ key on the outdoor-temperature module.
7.1.1 Room-temperature-driven heating operation
In this position the outdoor-temperature module (fig. 25)
serves only to indicate the outdoor temperature.

7.1.2 Outdoor-temperature-driven heating opera-
tion
Only select this operation mode if your house does not
accommodate a suitable reference room for the room-
temperature measurement, e.g. it is a multifamily house
or you have floor heating.
The right-hand large indication on the display (fig. 26)
represents the room temperature of the room where the
controller is located, e.g. heating-room temperature in
the heating room rather than the living-room tempera-
ture.

Function
The heating system’s water will not be heated further
than necessary for the room temperature.
z Lower outdoor temperature = higher heating
system’s water temperature
z Higher outdoor temperature = lower heating
system’s water temperature or deactivation of the
heating system.
If the room temperature is too low, it can be corrected
using the temperature rotating knob using manual
adjustment (see “Manually adjusting the room tempera-
ture” on page 21).
If you want to remain in automatic mode (temperature
rotating knob in ‘auto’ position) in order to correct the
room temperature, you must change the individual
switching points (see “Adjusting the target room-temper-
ature” on page 21).
7.1.3 Outdoor-temperature-driven heating opera-
tion with room-temperature activation
Select this operating mode if your house accommodates
a suitable reference room for the room-temperature
measurements; e.g. it is a single-family or multilevel
house.
Function
In principal as in ‘outdoor-temperature-driven heating
operation’. However, the room-temperature activation
also registers the effects of such heat sources as
incoming sunrays, lights, TV sets, etc.
If the measured room temperature (fig. 27) deviates
from the adjusted value, the controller will calculate a
new heating temperature. This allows for an even more
accurate determination of the heating-water tempera-
ture.
A CAUTION!
The heating-body valves in the reference room
accommodating the controller device must have
been fully opened.

7.2 On-line module OM 1.0
Using the on-line module (fig. 28) you can follow the
wall-hung gas boiler operation from your living room.
z Use the ‘Funktion’ key to select the indications.
z In the ‘Service’ position the operating and service
codes are displayed. These indications are intended
for the service activities carried out by the heating
specialist.
Should your heating installation not function correctly,
you can read out the error code and let your heating
specialist know by telephone.

8.1 Function
You can calibrate the displayed values against the Room

show the current measured value of the sensor and on

 Use a thermometer to measure the room tempera-
ture at the spot where the ERC controller has been Cal

On the left the actual measure value will appear (fig. 33)
and on the right the blinking value that you want to
adjust.
 Turn the rotating knob until the temperature on the
display is the same as the room temperature you just
