  • 2. 865AD<br />People began to live in a place they called Oldham.<br />
  • 3. 1760<br />There were only 60 dwellings (houses) in Oldham.<br />
  • 4. 1778<br />The first mill in Oldham was built. It was called ‘Lees Mill.’<br />
  • 5. 1801<br />There were approximately 12,024 people living in Oldham.<br />
  • 6. 1840<br />The Town Hall, in Yorkshire Street was built.<br />
  • 7. 1854<br />The public baths in Union Street are built.<br />
  • 8. 1854<br />The Oldham Evening Chronicle newspaper was launched.<br />
  • 9. 1856<br />The Lyceum was opened.<br />
  • 10. 1861-1865<br />Oldham was affected by the Lancashire cotton famine. Many people lost their jobs because of the lack of cotton available.<br />
  • 11. 1876<br />Oldham Rugby League club was founded.<br />
  • 12. 1887<br />Oldham Coliseum Theatre was opened.<br />
  • 13. 1895<br />Oldham Athletic football club was founded but was originally called Pine Villa. <br />
  • 14. 1900<br />Winston Churchill was elected as MP for Oldham.<br />
  • 15. End of 19th Century<br />Oldham had 250 cotton mills.<br />
  • 16. 1923<br />Oldham War Memorial was built.<br />
  • 17. 1961<br />The tubular bandage was invented in Oldham.<br />
  • 18. 1978<br />Louise Brown- the world’s first test tube baby was born.<br />
  • 19. 1989<br />The Royal Oldham Hospital was opened. It had formerly been known as Oldham District and General Hospital. <br />
  • 20. 2001<br />The population of Oldham according to the census was 103,544. <br />
  • 21. 2002<br />The art gallery, Gallery Oldham, was completed in February as the first phase of a new cultural quarter to the south of the town centre. <br />
  • 22. 2005<br />The University Centre Oldham was opened in May. <br />
