  • 2. 865AD
    People began to live in a place they called Oldham.
  • 3. 1760
    There were only 60 dwellings (houses) in Oldham.
  • 4. 1778
    The first mill in Oldham was built. It was called ‘Lees Mill.’
  • 5. 1801
    There were approximately 12,024 people living in Oldham.
  • 6. 1840
    The Town Hall, in Yorkshire Street was built.
  • 7. 1854
    The public baths in Union Street are built.
  • 8. 1854
    The Oldham Evening Chronicle newspaper was launched.
  • 9. 1856
    The Lyceum was opened.
  • 10. 1861-1865
    Oldham was affected by the Lancashire cotton famine. Many people lost their jobs because of the lack of cotton available.
  • 11. 1876
    Oldham Rugby League club was founded.
  • 12. 1887
    Oldham Coliseum Theatre was opened.
  • 13. 1895
    Oldham Athletic football club was founded but was originally called Pine Villa.
  • 14. 1900
    Winston Churchill was elected as MP for Oldham.
  • 15. End of 19th Century
    Oldham had 250 cotton mills.
  • 16. 1923
    Oldham War Memorial was built.
  • 17. 1961
    The tubular bandage was invented in Oldham.
  • 18. 1978
    Louise Brown- the world’s first test tube baby was born.
  • 19. 1989
    The Royal Oldham Hospital was opened. It had formerly been known as Oldham District and General Hospital.
  • 20. 2001
    The population of Oldham according to the census was 103,544.
  • 21. 2002
    The art gallery, Gallery Oldham, was completed in February as the first phase of a new cultural quarter to the south of the town centre.
  • 22. 2005
    The University Centre Oldham was opened in May.
