Ruby Bridges: Pioneer in School Integration b: September 8, 1954
At age 6, integrated William Frantz public school
First African-American child to attend an all-white elementary school in the South
Ruby Bridges, now Ruby Bridges Hall, still lives in New Orleans.
Week 3: Children in the Civil Rights Movement “ I now know that experience comes to us for a purpose, and if we follow the guidance of the spirit within us, we will probably find that the purpose is a good one. ”

Barbara Rose Johns: Civil rights activist b: 1935 – d: 1991
Her school was designed and built to hold 200 students; by 1951 enrollment 400.
KKK burned a cross in her yard one night
Her contribution to civil rights is often overlooked because she was a teenager when she made a difference .

Mary Louise Smith: Civil rights activist b: 1937
Just 18 years old when she was arrested.
Arrested for not giving up her seat on a bus 40 days before of Rosa Parks on similar charges.
Her father bailed her from jail and paid her fine, nine dollars.
A devout Catholic, she is still a member of St. Jude Church where she was baptized.

Linda Brown b: 1943
Walked a mile to get to her black elementary school, even though a white elementary school was only seven blocks away.
Brown vs. Board of Education ended “separate but equal” education
Case reopened in 1979 because Topeka school district 501 was still segregated. In 1993, courts ruled schools were still segregated and ordered district to desegregate them.
Week 3: Children in the Civil Rights Movement “ Freedom is knowing who you really are.”
