Major record label Case study

 1. 1. By Chloe Porter
 2. 2.

Owner ship - For the production of music, with the illegal downloading of music, this will effect the music company a lot financially .

Production - Before to get music out to people all there was were CD’s which you had to go and buy from a store or radio. Now with the internet music companies don’t have to spend so much on producing CD’s as you can buy virtually any song you want off the internet e.g. iTunes store,, and you can also listen to your any song through

Marketing - To advertise music there is a lot more ways to advertise than there was 10 years ago. Music companies will use the internet and also recently the iPhone which has full access of the internet than any ordinary phone. Youtube is again a popular choice of advertising as it gives the consumer a chance to listen to the song before they buy it. Also a new format is now Spotify which allows you to listen to any song/album for free as many times as you like and gives you the chance to purchase the song afterwards.

How Media technology has affected these areas
 3. 3.

Distribution - To distribute music has never been easier, there are so many formats you can listen to music now as opposed to 10 years ago. For example in the last 10 years we have seen the iPod, MP3 players, Walkman phones, Mobile Phones, the computer (YouTube, Illegal downloading). Buying music on the internet is a lot of people’s preferred choice now as it means people haven't got to physically go out and buy there music whereas people prefer to just stay at home and with a click of a button you can purchase an album. However there is a down side to this, with the uprising of the internet has also been a way for people to download music illegally off such sites like, Piratebay etc.. Which becomes a huge problem for the record label as it means that less money could be made due to illegal downloading.

Exchange – There are now many ways in which you can buy music. You can go into a store and pay by cash and now you can use your credit/debit card to purchase music online. However again some people choose not to pay for music and therefore steals music off illegal websites.

 9. 9. Music Festivals

I personally think music festivals have had a huge impact on the music industry. Because people like to hear their music live now and enjoy the experience. Cause not only are you listening to one band, your listening to a whole range of bands that you may of never heard of but enjoy their music hence making you want to buy their music. Also when you go to a festival you will find that there is not just music you can listen to or watch, you will find that you can watch films, poetry, comedy, theme park rides. Basically a whole range of entertainment making it a good experience for a festival which brings a whole lot of people together.

 10. 10. Ownership

Universal own a range of different record companies such as:

- A&M/Octone

Decca label Group

Interscope Geffen A&M

The island Def jam music group

The verve music group

Universal motown republic group

Universal music enterprises

Universal music group Nashville

Universal music Latin entertainment

Universal Records South

Universal music group is known as the “parent” record company.

 11. 11. Production

My music group does produce CD’s still, but most people prefer to download their music off the internet.

Media technology has changes rapidly. Social networking such as Facebook, myspace etc.. has defiantly become a huge help in recruiting new artists and making them known through advertising. Also music festivals too, as some bands may not be known well but will be seen so therefore may catch a music scouts eye. And another big one is YouTube, which is so easy to get notcied as all you need to do is upload a video of you singing and a music scout could easily see it and get in touch with you. Esmee Denters who was recently signed with Universal was found on the YouTube by Justin Timberlake.

 12. 12. Marketing Marketing Methods YouTube Used to view free music video content or any kind of film based media. Spotify A programme you download that lets you listen to the music of your choice as many times as you like funded by adverts . Billboards Of course can reach to thousands of people a day. Social Networking This is how many bands/ artists have been established and is a great way of advertising as it can reach to millions of people to promote an artist. Website ad’s These can be found at the side of a website of where ever which could have advertising of an unheard band or artist. Music Festivals You could see an unheard band and could reach out to millions if televised.
 13. 13. Universal YouTube Account: On the Universal Music group page you can see that the main feature is an artist called Quincy Jones who is an up coming artist so they are obviously using YouTube to promote him and as he is collaborating with a well known artist Akon fans will want to listen to it. On they’re playlist they have most of there signed artists such as Ludacris, Black eyed Peas, OneRepublic, Rihanna, Lady Gaga.
 14. 14. Distribution and Exchange £5.93 £5.73 £4.99 £4.99 thehut Asda Amazon UK £8.93 £9.83 £.8.95 £8.93 thehut Asda Amazon UK
 15. 15.

iTunes stock all of my major artists tracks and albums and the prices for a single can range from 79p to £1.

The new media has benefitted the distribution of my major record label because more people can access music whenever they like and not have to leave their house. However some record labels disagree with free streaming, for example Warner has just pulled out from all of their artists from sites such as spotify, and we7 because they feel free streaming is damaging the industry.

New media technology has brought free streaming, YouTube and sites such as Spotify. And also buying music off the internet has become a huge hit in the past 10 years. This means that no one technically has to leave their house to buy the music they like, and with one click can access millions of songs which they can listen to for free and buy too.
