Meaning:
To disclose a secret.
Origin:
The origin of this phrase is related to the supposed fraud of substituting a cat for a pig at markets. If you let the cat out of the bag you disclosed the trick - and avoided buying a pig in a bag.
Example:" We could have wished that the author of the article... had not let the cat out of the bag revealing the end of the story."
More examples:
I was trying to keep the party a secret, but Jim went and let the cat out of the bag.
Amazingly, not one of the people who knew about the surprise let the cat out of the bag.
"Bob didn't want anyone to know he was sick, but his wife let the cat out of the bag."
