      • Rwanda is a small hilly, landlocked and beautiful country in the East-Central Africa.
      • Size: 26,338 sq km
      • Population : 9,038,000(2005)
      • 0.99 male(s)/female (2007 est.)
      • 0-14 years: 41.9%
      • 15-64 years: 55.7%
      • 65 years and over: 2.5%) (2007 est.)

    7. What is Rwanda-VCP?
      • A community based project
      • Made possible by the participation the community, local and international students
      • With a common goal of improving health and living standards in underprivileged communities and developing skills and knowledge of participating students.
    8. RVCP History
      • R-VCP was initiated in 2000 by a partnership between medical students of the National University of Rwanda ,the International Federation of Medical Students’ Associations (IFMSA) and huye district community.
      • VCPs are a series of developmental projects initiated by students world wide and they follow the guidelines of the village concept project document, established in 1998 by IFMSA and WHO in Geneva.
      • VCPs are intersectorial and multidiscinary
    9. Target group
      • Southern Province of Rwanda
      • Huye District
      • Huye sector
      • Villages :
      • Nyakagezi, Rukira,
      • Muyogoro, Sovu
    10. Needs addressed
      • 98% were settled in the villages after the genocide
      • The majority are women and children
      • Gender imbalance
      • Common diseases: Malaria (cause 94% of mortality), Diarrhea, respiratory infections, Kwashiorkor, HIV/AIDS
      • Poverty( most of the people earn 150-200$ US per year) , 98% are small scale farmers
      • Lack of sanitation facilities (water, latrines, etc.)
      • Over 36% cannot read and write
      • High child mortality and maternal mortality
      • High fertility rate
    11. Objectives
      • Improving the village’s general sanitation situation.
      • Reduction of the prevalence of malaria .
      • Educating the community on prevention of HIV/AIDS, STDs and unwanted pregnancies.
      • Improve the knowledge of the target community on nutrition and family planning
      • Empowering women to effectively manage natural resources of their environment.
      • Establishement of income generating activities
      • Educating local and international students on development aid projects, interdisciplinary and primary health care.
