  2. 2. Geography <ul><li>Korea, located in the continent Asia, </li></ul><ul><li>lies adjacent to China and Japan. It is </li></ul><ul><li>also surrounded by Amnokkang and </li></ul><ul><li>Tuman-gang rivers. </li></ul><ul><li>As a result of Korea’s unique </li></ul><ul><li>geographical location and cultural </li></ul><ul><li>diffusion, China, Japan, and Korea </li></ul><ul><li>established Buddhism and Confucianism. </li></ul><ul><li>The complete area of the peninsula is </li></ul><ul><li>22,154 square kilometers. </li></ul>A.G
  3. 3. Geography (continued) <ul><li>At the end of the Korean war between North and South Korea, a demilitarized zone was established on the 37th parallel. </li></ul><ul><li>Korea has approximately 3,000 islands and majority of them are located around the Yellow Sea. </li></ul>A.G
  4. 4. A leader emerges <ul><li>When Korea was in its beginning stages, different clans controlled different regions. It wasn’t until 108 B.C. that a ruler was acknowledged. The Han empire conquered much of Korea and established a military government </li></ul>W.S.R
  5. 5. Korea advances <ul><li>During Han rule, 3 rival kingdoms emerge </li></ul><ul><li>In mid 600’s, the Silla defeat other 3 kingdoms; claim rule of Korean peninsula </li></ul><ul><li>Buddhist monasteries are built, writing form is established. </li></ul>W.S.R

The Koryu Dynasty <ul><li>The Koryu dynasty lasted four and a half centuries (935 to 1392). </li></ul><ul><li>Koryu’s central government was modeled after China’s. </li></ul><ul><li>Confucian exam systems as well as a university were established. </li></ul><ul><li>Koryu society was sharply divided between those of the aristocracy and the remaining population (military, commoners and slaves). </li></ul><ul><li>The sons of nobles got the best positions in the aristocracy, no matter what they got on the exams. </li></ul><ul><li>Wealthy nobles created large estates and left the rest of the Koryu population with little to keep themselves alive by. </li></ul><ul><li>S.C </li></ul>

Mongolian Invasion <ul><li>The Mongols invaded Korea in 1231, after just after the Koryu dynasty regained power after rebellions. </li></ul><ul><li>The Mongolian invaders asked for a tribute to be paid by Koryu rulers. </li></ul><ul><li>The tribute included 20,000 horses, clothing for 1 million soldiers, and children and artisans that would be taken as slaves. </li></ul><ul><li>The Mongol empire collapsed in the 1350’s. </li></ul><ul><li>Revolts led to military leaders overthrowing the Koryu Dynasty in 1392 and created land reforms. </li></ul><ul><li>The same military leaders as the ones described above, created a new dynasty called the Choson (also known as the Yi). </li></ul><ul><li>S.C </li></ul>
  8. 8. Koryu Culture <ul><li>A lot of Southeast Asia and Korea was influenced by India and China. Everything, from religion to art, manifested form Chinese culture. However, the Koreans made their own. </li></ul>A.M
  9. 9. Koryu culture- Korean Achievements <ul><li>Korean artisans became famous for a special set of printing blocks, which was used to print Buddhist scriptures. Although the set was destroyed by the Mongols, it was recreated and still exists today. This was one of the greatest achievements of the Koreans </li></ul>A.M
  10. 10. Koryu Culture- Korean Skills <ul><li>The Korean artists made a special celadon pottery, that had a green glaze. This was inspired by Song porcelain artists. </li></ul><ul><li>The scholars and artists of Korea were known to write beautiful poetry. They also wrote the first national history of Korea. </li></ul>A.M
