  • Exploring Terms of the Endocrine System Chapter 11 Presentation By: Dominique Michel
  • The Endocrine System
    • The endocrine system consist of a group of glands that secretes many hormones.
    • These hormones regulate the body activities.
    • This activities include sexual function and immune system response.
  • Endocrine System (cont.)
    • Conditions or diseases of the endocrine system (glands), usually non-inflammatory are termed Endocrinopathy.
    • Endo = within
    • Pathy = condition or disease
    • These conditions/disease include hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism.
    • Hyperthyroidism- overactive thyroid gland that produces excessive amounts of thyroid hormone.
    • Hypothyroidism- abnormally low production of thyroid hormone.

  • Hyperglycemia
    • Hyperglycemia is the medical term for having excessive sugar in the blood.
    • Hyper= excessive
    • glyc= sweet or sugar
    • -emia= condition of the blood
    • This occurs when the body does not have enough insulin or when the body can not properly use it.
    • This disorder is a major complication in people with diabetes.

  • Hyperglycemia (cont.)
    • This disorder is a major complication in people with diabetes.
    • This disorder can become a serious problem if it goes without treatment.
    • If not treated, this disorder can possibly lead to ketoacidosis.
    • Ketoacidosis is a diabetic coma that occurs when the body does not have enough insulin.
  • Hyponatremia
    • Hyponatremia- a condition which the sodium levels in the blood are low.
    • Hypo= low
    • Natr= salt
    • -emia= condition of the blood
    • Factors of this condition include excessive water intake (during endurance sports).
    • This excessive intake causes the sodium levels to drop and causes the cells to swell.
    • This swelling can range from mild to severe.
