  • 2. My Essential Question
    • What do fossils found in Africa teach us about history?
  • 3. Why I picked this topic.
    • I picked this topic because I wanted to learn more about the history of Africa, and I thought learning about the ancient fossils found there would be a good place to learn.
  • 4. What I know about this topic.
    • Fossils are ancient remains of humans or animals.
    • More fossils have been found in Africa then anywhere else.
  • 5. Lucy
    • 1997 a 160,000 year old human skulls was found they named it “Lucy”
    • Lucy’s skull is much larger then modern humans.
    • Oldest fossilized remain of modern humans yet found.
  • 6. Archeology in Africa
    • Earliest evidence of archaeological activity anywhere comes from the right valley sites of east Africa.
    • Sarah desert use to be a ocean this is why many fish fossils have been found there.
    • 90% of all fossils are found in South Africa
    • In eastern Africa some fossils are clear on the ground.
  • 7. Gorgon
    • A “Gorgon” is an animal that was on this earth before the dinosaurs.
    • Gorgon fossils are only found in Africa.
    • Gorgons look similar to raptors as seen on the picture to the left.
  • 8. Surprising information.
    • A 160,000 human skull was found.
    • A 35 million year old giant bat was found in South Africa. (Bigger then a school bus)
    • A 500 year old body found with Gold jewelry.

    • What was the hardest fossil to find?
    • What was the oldest fossil ever found?
    • What was the first fossil ever found?
