      • Outline of the presentation
        • Who is doing what in relation to pornography
        • The pornographic discourses
        • The impact of pornography
        • Why young men use pornography
        • Ways forward
      • Draws on data from qualitative studies in Rochdale, Greater Manchester involving 70 young men and 25 young women
    • Meaning of Pornography Erotica + power Majority activity among young men New way of accessing pornography
      • Discourses of Pornography
      • Largely resonate with societal views
      • Sex is physical – an emotional vacuum – culmination of sex is male orgasm following penetration.
      • Compulsory Heterosexuality
      • Privileges men’s pleasure over women
      • Men should take the lead and be good at sex
      • Women always willing to have sex and can be manipulated to orgasm
      • Sex is consequence free
      • Impact of pornography
      • 1. Validates the beliefs of some young men and women.
      • 2. Increases expectations of young women
        • “ they get really sick ideas from watching it [pornography] and it you don’t do them then they moan”
        • “ that [pornography] is why they think that sex is supposed to be so amazing to them, and then they’re disappointed…..and the girl’s disappointed because the lads crap””
    • 3. Creates expectations that young men cannot fulfill and this has consequences for themselves and young women. 4. Young men see sex as their pleasure – women’s pleasure is reduced to a reflection of their expertise. Anything that reduces male pleasure is to be avoided. Impact is greatest where pornography reflects existing peer beliefs and where young men have fewest alternative frames of reference
    • What does pornography do for young men. Masturbation and pleasure – though not always acknowledged. As a source of information - filling a perceived gap Means of demonstrating heterosexuality in lieu of intercourse
    • Conclusions: Pornography reflects societal attitudes to sex – albeit in an extreme form. Real change needs to address societal change. Need to address how young men’s legitimate needs can be met in ways that are not about exploitation Need for a more open debate about pornography among professionals and with young people Ensure the issues of power and exploitation in relation to sex are central to sex and relationships education.
