Recorded Facts about Musashi <ul><li>Born in village called Miyamoto in Mimasaka Province in 1584. </li></ul><ul><li>Named Shinmen Musashi No Kami Fujiwara No Genshin, but called Miyamoto Musashi for short. </li></ul><ul><li>Born to powerful Samurai family, but orphaned at age 7 and reared by uncle who was a priest. </li></ul><ul><li>Began practicing Kendo . </li></ul>
  3. 3. <ul><li>Fought first duel when he was 13, killed a Samurai Arima Kigei. </li></ul><ul><li>Fought and won 60 duels before age 29. </li></ul><ul><li>Perfected the art of using two swords (nito ryu). </li></ul><ul><li>Sometimes fought with wooden sword (bokken) against multiple opponents. </li></ul><ul><li>Fought in 5 major battles as a Ronin. </li></ul><ul><li>Stopped fighting in duels after age 29, lived apart from society in pursuit of perfecting his skills with the sword. </li></ul>
  4. 4. Duel with Sasaki Kojiro <ul><li>Fought on the island near Ogura in 1612. </li></ul><ul><li>Fashioned a wooden sword from spare oar on the way to the island. </li></ul><ul><li>Killed Kojiro with a single blow to the head. </li></ul><ul><li>Stopped using real swords. </li></ul>

  12. 12. The Water Book <ul><li>The warrior spirit must be like water. </li></ul><ul><li>Water can adjust to any shape vessel. </li></ul><ul><li>Can be a single drop or an ocean. </li></ul>
  13. 13. <ul><li>High spirit or low spirit are both weak. </li></ul><ul><li>Warrior’s spirit must be the same in normal life or in combat. </li></ul><ul><li>Do not let the enemy see your spirit. </li></ul><ul><li>Mind must be fluid and centered. </li></ul>

  16. 16. The Fire Book <ul><li>The Way during battle is the same whether fighting a single enemy or an army. </li></ul><ul><li>The enemy also possesses spirit, you must learn to read them . </li></ul>
  17. 17. <ul><li>When the spirit is large, it is like a large army: movement is slow and easy to predict. </li></ul><ul><li>When spirit is small, movements can be made instantly and is hard to predict. </li></ul><ul><li>You must train day and night to learn to perceive slightest changes in enemy’s spirit. </li></ul>
  18. 18. Holding Down the Pillow <ul><li>Do not allow enemy’s head to rise. </li></ul><ul><li>Suppress useful actions, but allow useless ones. </li></ul>
  19. 19. Release Four Hands <ul><li>In a stalemate when no progress is being made. </li></ul><ul><li>Abandon what you’re doing and defeat the enemy by changing your method to one the enemy was not expecting. </li></ul>
  20. 20. The Wind Book <ul><li>To have an advantage in strategy, you must learn the ways of other schools. </li></ul><ul><li>This scroll examines the Ways of other martial art schools. </li></ul><ul><li>Musashi shows disdain for schools which profits financially or in status. </li></ul>

The Void Book <ul><li>Traditional Buddhist idea of a void is not something that is lacking…. </li></ul><ul><li>It is rather something where the superfluous had been eliminated. </li></ul><ul><li>Void is beyond a man’s understanding. </li></ul><ul><li>If one learns what does exist, then you would know what doesn’t exist. </li></ul>
