1. 2. Scoliosis Curving of the spine. The spine curves away from the middle or sideways. Scoliosis
 2. 4. INFO

Scoliosis is not a disease; descriptive term

Abnormal curves in spine

family history of spinal deformity are at greater risk for developing scoliosis

Curving of the spine. The spine curves away from the middle or sideways.

Rotation: The rotational deformity is usually subtle, but is always present in a true scoliosis deformity.

Lateral curvature: A lateral curvature of the spine means that the vertebral column bends from side-to-side.

 3. 5. Statistics

Prevalance of Scoliosis: 3-per-1,000 to 5-per-1000 children (NIAMS)

Prevalance Rate: approx 1 in 333 or 0.30% or 816,000 people in USA

Prevalance of Scoliosis: Of every 1,000 children, 3 to 5 develop spinal curves that are considered large enough to need treatment.

2% women; .5% men

 6. 8. No Cures Exist

Treatments

Observation- less than 20 degree curve. Checked every 6 months; typically adolescent.

Bracing- used if growth left; uses pressure to help straighten; does not reverse the curve.

Surgery- required with a curve of 40 to 50 degrees; spinal fusion - spine is stabilized by fusing together two or more vertebrae, using bone grafts and metal rods and screws.

 7. 9. Discovery

Milwaukee Brace Blount and Schmidt in 1946

Boston Brace 1970’s

Rosenberger 1980

Wilmington1980

Sugery first performed in 1911 by Dr. Russel Hibbs first spinal fusion in the New York Orthopedic Hospital

Milwaukee Rosenberger Wilmington Boston
 8. 10. Point of Interest Most interesting Severe Scoliosis People can have a problem where there whole spine is not straight, instead with a huge curve in it Couldn’t understand how it’s is possible Fascinates me how such a severe deformity could exist
