    History of CALL - Presentation Transcript

      • INTRODUCTION
      • Writing the history of CALL.
      • CALL has acquired a great deal of maturity in the last ten years.
      • A lot of branches have been developed.
      • Initiative taken in order to attract small scale CALL developers.
      • History of CALL initiative supported by CALICO,EUROCALL and World Cal l.
      • Approaches to Second/Foreign Language Teaching.
      • Language used to be an intellectual challenge ( Latin, the traditional, grammar translation approach).
      • At the beginning of the 20 th century the first machine to teach language was designed.
      • In 1973 Claude Shannon formulated his information theory which had some influence on structural linguistics.
      • The term “Applied Linguistics” was
      • used for first time in the USA.
      • Skinner’s book “The Science of Learning and Art of Teaching”
      • the founder of Behaviorism was John Watson in 1925.
      • In 1957 “ Syntactic Structures” by Noam Chomsky was published.
      • In 1961 the first language laboratory was established in an educational institution in the UK.
      • The Audiolingual approach emphasized the spoken rather than the written form.
      • In 1963 C. Gastagno published the silent way.
      • In 1966, the TESOL association was formed.
      • In the 70s the “communicative approach was born”.
      • Total Physical Response approach was born in 1977.
      • At the beginning of the century tend to lend much of this methodology ton psychology.
      • André martinet did a lot of good to the cause of language learning in modern Europe.
      • Pike recieves a tribute on the SIL (summer institue of linguitics) Web Site.
      • Unlike CALL, linguistics has a history behind, as it goes back at least to Greek philosophers such as Plato.
      • Modern linguistics has its roots in 19th century.
      • In the past methods tended to speacialize in the technique.
      • However, it is now believed that successful LL involves competence.
      • There are now many researchers involved in CALL.
      • The situational approach (Krashen) attempted to teach language in a situational context
      • The most important element of Krashen’s theory is the stress on the availability of comprehensible input.
      • The whole approach was based in the idea that babies acquire language by actually using it.
