    Hurrah, Obama won!

I hope Deaf people will join an email campaign that is under way to encourage both Deaf people and people with disabilities to EMAIL OBAMA! More about why this is so important and how to do it at: Obama’s election night speech had special meaning to people with disabilities because it is very rare for any politician to not only mention us in such a major speech but to include us as simply part of the mainstream. I did a slideshow on an email-writing campaign to thank Obama, and to remind him of the campaign promises he made to people with disabilities: http://www.slideshare.net/Andrea_Shettle/email-obama-presentation

  20. ECONOMY
    • The Problem
    • Increasing Debt: Under President Bush, the federal debt has increased from $5.7 trillion to $8.8 trillion, an increase of more than 50 percent.
    • Irresponsible Tax Cuts: President Bush's policies of giving tax breaks for the wealthy will cost the nation over $2.3 trillion by the time they expire in 2009.
  21. ENERGY
    • Provide short-term relief to American families facing pain at the pump
    • Help create five million new jobs by strategically investing $150 billion over the next ten years to catalyze private efforts to build a clean energy future.
    • Within 10 years save more oil than we currently import from the Middle East and Venezuela combined.
    • Put 1 million Plug-In Hybrid cars -- cars that can get up to 150 miles per gallon -- on the road by 2015, cars that we will work to make sure are built here in America.
    • Ensure 10 percent of our electricity comes from renewable sources by 2012, and 25 percent by 2025.
    • Implement an economy-wide cap-and-trade program to reduce greenhouse gas emissions 80 percent by 2050.
  22. DISABILITY LEGISLATION
    • First, provide Americans with disabilities with the educational opportunities they need to succeed.
    • Second, end discrimination and promote equal opportunity.
    • Third, increase the employment rate of workers with disabilities.
    • And fourth, support independent, community-based living for Americans with disabilities.
  23. DISABILITY LEGISLATION
    • Barack Obama supports ADA legislation:
    • "U.S. Senator Barack Obama joined Senators Tom Harkin (D-IA) and Orrin Hatch (R-UT) to cosponsor the Americans with Disabilities Restoration Act: "With nearly 54 million Americans living with disabilities today, we have a responsibility to ensure they have better access, more opportunities, and increased independence.
    • "Enacting the Americans with Disabilities Act was a historic milestone when it was signed into law eighteen years ago, but we still have more to do. We must reaffirm our nation's commitment to those with disabilities by immediately passing legislation to reverse judicial decisions that permit discrimination against persons with disabilities.
    • "I am proud to support this legislation, and I commend Senators Harkin and Hatch for their leadership on behalf of Americans with disabilities.""
  24. IRAQ
    • “ Here is the truth: fighting a war without end will not force the Iraqis to take responsibility for their own future. And fighting in a war without end will not make the American people safer.
    • So when I am Commander-in-Chief, I will set a new goal on day one: I will end this war. Not because politics compels it. Not because our troops cannot bear the burden- as heavy as it is. But because it is the right thing to do for our national security, and it will ultimately make us safer.”
  25. HEALTH CARE
    • Provide Cheaper Prescription Drugs
    • Provide Transparency to Medicare Prescription Drug Plans
    • Protect and Strengthen Medicare
  26. SOCIAL SECURITY
    • Social Security:
    • As part of a bipartisan plan that would be phased in over many years, he would ask those making over $250,000 to contribute a bit more to Social Security to keep it sound.
    • Retirement Savings:
    • Obama will eliminate all income taxation of seniors making less than $50,000 per year.
    • Require Full Disclosure of Company Pension Investments
    • Ensure savings incentives are fair to all workers by creating a generous savings match for low and middle-income Americans. His plan will match 50 percent of the first $1,000 of savings for families that earn less than $75,000.
