  • California History Lily Fulkerson 2009-2010 4 th grade
  • Valley Region
    • The valley is a flat land that is surrounded by mountain.
    • Valleys are good farming areas.
    • Valleys also have lots of rivers.
  • Coast
    • Most people live by the coast.
    • The coast is very pretty.
    • The coast is near the ocean.
  • Mountain Region
    • Mountains have many mines in it.
    • Mountains also have many animals living on the mountain.
  • Desert Region
    • A lot of animals have homes in the desert. Plants live their too. One animal is chameleon and one plant is a cactus.
  • Sir Francis Drake
    • In 1579 drake exploers California.
    • He stole gold from the Spanish and came to California to repair the boat from the heavy gold.
  • Juan Cabrilloa
    • Juan Cabrillo lands in San Diego Bay.
    • In 1542 he sailed north looking for a way to get to China for silks and spices.
    • He died fighting Indians when he tripped over a rock during battle.
  • Pio Pico
    • Po pio was a govner.
    • Po Pio went to Mexio to hid dering the Mexio and Amaren war.
  • Sebastian Vizcaino
    • In 1602 Vizcaino lands in Monterey bay.
    • He trapped animals for fur.
  • Serra
    • Serra owned a mission after he worked in a mission.
    • Serra also worked in a missionary in 1749.
  • Portola
    • Portola worked for Serra.
    • He also became a priest.
    • In 1767 Spain sent a soldier named porol'a
  • Ranchos
    • Ranchos are farm land.
    • Rancho wifes would make dinner.
  • Mission
    • Missions had many Indians in it.
    • At lest more than 80,000 of Indians were brought to the mission system one way or another.
  • Pueblos
    • Pueblos are used for farming.
    • Settlers and Indians lived there.
  • Sutter
    • In 1841 John Sutter had built a fort that became know as Sutter's Fort.
    • It was located in Sacramento.
  • Ivan Kuskov and Fort Ross
    • In 1812 Ivan Kuskov came to CA.
    • Ivan and settlers built Fort Ross.
  • Jedediah Smith
    • In 1826, Smith led the first group of settlers to C.A.
    • He was a trapper and an explorer and one of many pioneers to come to California.
  • James Beckwourth
    • In 1850 James Beckwourth led settlers to C.A.
    • He led them though the Sierra Nevada mountains.
    • The path he found was later called Beckwourth Pass
  • John Bidwell and John C. Fremont
    • They both brought settlers to C.A.
    • When they did they explored and made maps.
  • 49'ers and James Marshall
    • James Marshall found gold which started the gold rush in 1848.
    • Miners arrived in 1849 by over land, or boat by the Isthmus of Panama or Cape Horn.
  • Sam Brannon and Levis Stravss
    • They were two businessmen who made it rich by selling needed supplies.
    • Levis made pants pockets.
  • Biddy Mason
    • Biddy Mason was born on 1818. She was born in slavery.
    • Biddy Mason petitioned for her freedom.
  • Mary Tape
    • Mary Tape was a Chinese immigrant who lived in San Francisco in the late 1800s.
    • Tape and her husband argued that the city should change this rule.
  • Mexican American War
    • In 1848 Mexico signed the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalo.
    • CA BECAME part of state hood.
