THE LINK BETWEEN MUSIC AND LITERACY <ul><li>I have always been told that the students who study music do better in school, and from my personal experiences I have found it to be true in most schools. </li></ul><ul><li>Musical learning is very similar to other skills, such as reading, math, chess, and puzzle solving. We learn music and reading in a similar way. </li></ul><ul><li>The reason music and reading are so similar is because they both use symbols and interpreting visual and auditory images. </li></ul>

THE LINK BETWEEN MUSIC AND LITERACY <ul><li>    &quot;For the classroom reading teacher across the hall, the songs, rhythmic patterns, and expression devices that we find in music can also play a part in reading instruction,&quot; Hansen says. &quot;That not only makes it more fun for the kids, it helps children learn using the idea of singing songs to help them recall, for example, the alphabet, the states, etc. That's not music teaching, but it's using music to teach” (Chappel). </li></ul>“ A-ha” moment: I chose this quote because it clearly explains how learning music can be very helpful to young children developing skills.

They not only develop skills to read and or play music, they expand on their reading skills, memorization skills, and auditory skills in other classes as well. </li></ul><ul><li>Music education is essential for our kids. </li></ul>

SINGING AND MOVING: TEACHING STRATEGIES FOR AUDIATION IN CHILDREN <ul><li>The author, Garner, claims that developing listening schools is essential to teaching music to children. </li></ul><ul><li>She encourages the student to use bodily movement and vocal responses as a part of her teaching methodologies to get the children active. </li></ul>“ A-ha” moment: This is a great way to get every kid involved and excited about what they are doing.

SINGING AND MOVING: TEACHING STRATEGIES FOR AUDIATION IN CHILDREN <ul><li>If children do learn how to use their listening skills toward music, they have a higher chance of becoming better listeners and better students in other subjects. </li></ul><ul><li>&quot; According to Gordon, these types (of audiation) correspond to the intellectual processes governing the hearing of pitch, rhythm, dynamics, tempo, or timbre. They involve the activities of listening, reading, writing dictation, performing from memory, writing from memory, creating or improvising while performing, creating or improvising while reading, and creating or improvising while writing” (Garner). </li></ul><ul><li>These skills are essential in other subjects as well! </li></ul>
  8. 8. THE DOCTOR OF MUSICAL ARTS IN MUSIC EDUCATION: A DISTINCTIVE CREDENTIAL NEEDED AT THIS TIME <ul><li>This article describes the changes music education is experiencing. New music, cultural beliefs, and technologies require teachers to “update” their skills. </li></ul><ul><li>This relates to the other articles because teachers are beginning t o realize how useful music can be to help teach children basic skills. They must keep up with the technologies in music as well. </li></ul>

THE DOCTOR OF MUSICAL ARTS IN MUSIC EDUCATION: A DISTINCTIVE CREDENTIAL NEEDED AT THIS TIME <ul><li>This article also describes how the US is encouraging music teachers to get their masters degree and in higher levels, a doctorate. </li></ul><ul><li>“ A-ha” moment: They believe that by requiring these two things they will be improving the quality of their teachers therefore improving the students’ educational experiences. </li></ul>
  10. 10. CONCLUSION <ul><li>Based on what I have researched, many educators think music education is very important especially in younger children. Music education gives them many skills and helps them in multiple subjects. It is a shame that schools are cutting music and art programs all over the country. These programs give children the chance to express themselves. Music is very important to the growth of a child’s learning experience. </li></ul>
