What is Haptic Technology?
Haptic Technology is any technology
that interfaces users via experiences of
forces such as
Vibration
Motion
And Touch
Mechanical stimulation is used in the
creation of objects, only existing in a
virtual/computer simulation.
Haptic Technology has improved
and developed, in the usage of…
Medical,
Video Gaming,
Robotics,
Virtual Reality,
And Art and Design.
Medicine
Haptic interfaces have been used for
Training of procedures
Example, doctors can practice on
virtual patients and train under
virtual simulations
Remote surgery (teleoperators)
‘Virtual Haptic Back’ – allows
siginifcant teaching aid in detection
of medical problems via touch (e.g.
reciprocal of stiffness of virtual
human backs)
Art and Design
Allows interactivity with virtual objects
Used in Graphic Design or Animation
Haptic Technology enables user to come
into contact with virtual instruments or
media, and produce sounds or images
Simulation usually results in vibrations
In design, touch feedback is given
relating to created surface of
creation/sculpture.
Virtual Reality
Haptic interfaces are very commonly
used in this area
Used in demonstration simulations for
training such as medical procedures,
military procedures or driving of a virtual
vehicle
May also occur in Gaming purposes,
allowing users to feel real sensations of
an attack, environmental element or
shock.
