The Geography of Southeast Asia <ul><li>Two main parts: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>The long peninsula. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>The chain of islands. </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Located in the tropics; monsoons occur regularly. </li></ul><ul><li>Land is separated by different barriers almost everywhere. </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Bodies of water in the island chain. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>On the peninsula, five rivers and mountains the land. </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Because of this, this area has never been ruled as a huge empire. </li></ul><ul><li>Southeast Asia was an important area for merchants, being that its waters are the quickest way to get from the Indian to the Pacific Oceans. </li></ul>E.     3. 3. THE ANGKOR WAT <ul><li>Angkor Wat is one of the world’s greatest architectural achievements. It is a temple at Angkor, Cambodia, built for King Suryavarman II. It is the only one to have remained a significant religious center dedicated to Hindu, to Vishnu, then Buddhist. It has become a symbol of Cambodia, appearing on its national flag, and it is the country's main attraction for visitors. </li></ul><ul><li>The architecture of the building, and one of the causes for its fame is Angkor Wat's decoration. The inner walls have a series of scenes mainly showing episodes from the Hindu epics the Ramayana and the Mahabharata. The north-west corner shows the Battle of Lanka and the Battle of Kurukshetra On the southern side is the only historical scene, it shows the 32 hells and 37 heavens of Hindu mythology. </li></ul>M. The Khmer Empire <ul><li>The Kingdom of Khmer, Cambodia, is a prosperous trading region, lying on the trade and pilgrimage route between India and China. </li></ul><ul><li>Had improved rice cultivation. </li></ul><ul><li>For centuries was the mainland power in South East Asia. </li></ul><ul><li>The empire's official religions included Hinduism and Mahayana Buddhism </li></ul><ul><li>The Angkor period (889-1434), the golden age of Khmer civilization, saw the empire at its greatest extent </li></ul><ul><li>The great achievement of the Khmers was in architecture and sculpture & built elaborate irrigation systems. </li></ul><ul><li>The Angkorian period began after the Khmer King, Jayavarman II, announced the independence of Kambujadesa (Cambodia) from Java. </li></ul><ul><li>Khmers fought many wars against Annamese and the Chams in the early 12th century. They invaded Champa .In 1177, Angkor was attacked by the Chams. They were invaded by Thai and the Khmer power declined in 1434, after the Thai captured Angkor, the capital was transferred to Phnom Penh ; this event marks the end of the brilliance and greatness of the Khmer civilization. </li></ul>M. Vietnam <ul><li>Least influences by India. </li></ul><ul><li>China overtook northern Vietnam during the Han dynasty. </li></ul><ul><li>Vietnam became independent in 939. </li></ul><ul><li>Absorbed Buddhism from Chinese. </li></ul><ul><li>Ly Dynasty rulers made Hanoi capital. </li></ul><ul><li>Vietnamese forced Mongols to withdraw from attacks on Hanoi. </li></ul>G. The Geography of Korea <ul><li>Also a Peninsula, Korea sticks out of Asia, pointing toward Japan. </li></ul><ul><li>Korea is relatively small (about the size of Utah). </li></ul><ul><li>The climate is very extreme (very hot summers, very cold winters. </li></ul><ul><li>Korea is similar to Japan in that the land is very mountainous, resulting in very little land good for farming. </li></ul><ul><li>Korea’s separation from the rest of Asia by mountain in the north and water on the other sides caused Korean civilization to develop independently from the rest of Asia. </li></ul>E. The Koryu Culture <ul><li>Korean art was influenced by song porcelain artist. </li></ul><ul><li>Korean artists were famous for their celadon pottery. </li></ul><ul><li>Writers and scholars wrote fine poetry </li></ul><ul><li>Created the first written history of Korea. </li></ul><ul><li>Artisans created one of the greatest fortunes in the Buddhist world- a set of 1000s of carved wooden blocks with Buddhists scriptures. </li></ul><ul><li>D.
