    1. Popular Music and Teaching Issues Angela Amato PGCE Music Institute of Education
    2. Introduction
      • Popular Music in Teaching Education , to develop musical skills without necessarily reading music and also to learn in a more informal way.
      • It is important for music classroom teachers to find approchable ways to encourage students to work on the National Curriculum , particularly at compulsory level :KS3.
    3. Agenda
      • This research is structured in nine major parts : rationale, research methods,school description and considerations, discussion, jazz,blues and classical-pop-rock styles, teaching issues, my experience,current debate,conclusion .
      • The research is based on interviews with teachers and students, informations acquired during the Lectures at University and ideas exchanged with other PGCE students .
    4. Overview
      • Influence of Popular Music on teaching methods.
      • Popular Music is appropriate for KS3 level in order to develop motivation , basic musical skills, and enjoyable athmosphere in the classroom because students work on repertoire which is familiar to them and because it is part of their culture.
    5. Vocabulary
      • I use the term Popular Music in a wide meaning : from traditional popular music as it could be Irish Music to the actual Popular music, nowadays defined as ‘Pop’.
    6. Topic One
      • Popular Music, examples of classroom activities.
      • Year 8 Class : Rock Music Project. Introduce the first lesson of the Project with a listening lesson .
      • Give a bass line on the board and instruct pupils to compose , in small groups 5/6, the melodic line in Pop-Rock music Style.
      • Break up lessons and listen to some groups.End of Project with a final recorded performance.
    7. Topic Two
      • Teaching Issues and Popular Music
      • Social issues , trends and fashion.
      • Classroom teaching , instrumental teaching, my own experience of
      • Pop Music as a performer.
      • New times : nowadays classical music is getting closer to popular music . Some examples are concerts and recordings of classical -pop music.
    8. Summary
      • I value the use of Popular Music in Schools . It is a positive way to promote good work in the classroom.
      • Since I aknowledged these issues I am more interested in using this repertoire regardless the fact that I meanly received classical music training.

      • I referred to Pop Music Magazines , books from Libraries and in particular to the letest edition of Dr. L. Green ‘s book “How Popular Musicians Learn” and C. Philpott
