1.5 Solving Inequalities - Presentation Transcript

    1. College Algebra 1.5 Solving Inequalities
    2. Equations vs. Inequalities
      • Equations : finite # of solutions
      • Example: x = 2 or x = -3
There are 3 methods of expressing the solution to an inequality . 1. Interval 2. Inequality 3. Graph Inequality : infinite # of solutions Example: -5 < x < 3
    3.
    4. Write each inequality using interval notation: Write each interval as an inequality involving x .
    5. Solving Linear Inequalities
      • Solve Linear Inequalities in almost the
      • same way you solved Linear Equations.
      • You may add, subtract, multiply, or divide each side by the same number.
BUT notice what happens when you multiply (or divide) both sides by a negative number……….
    6. Note the inequality symbol must be reversed!
      • ***When you multiply or divide
      • both sides of an inequality by a
      • ____________ number,
      • reverse the_______________.
The ‘Difference’ between solving Linear Equations and Linear Inequalities
    7.
    8.
    9.
    10. Solve the inequality: Graph the solution set.
