  • 1. Streetlight Energy Savings BPA Using Smart Pack TI by STI Streetlight Technology Inc.
  • 2. What is it?
    • A small control unit that can be installed inside the streetlight fixture at an estimated cost of $35, plus labor (approximately $6).
  • 3. Why should BPA and owners of streetlights be interested?
    • Significant energy savings can be accomplished with a moderate investment
    • This streetlight unit test may qualify for Research Development & Demonstration under C&RD
    • Reduced maintenance costs in labor and material are substantial
  • 4. What does each individual control unit do?
    • Turns lights on and off at preset times (most of the savings here)
    • Eliminates day-burning streetlights using a cadmium sulfide cell day/night sensor
    • Cuts power to the lamp when lamp cycling (failure) is detected, thus eliminating damage to ballasts and eliminating Radio Frequency Interference (RFI)
    • Trouble light alerts maintenance personnel of a malfunction, during the daytime
    • The real-time clock (daylight savings, leap year) is backed up by a 72 hour supercapacitor
    • Hand-held remote control used to set time and timer
    • Manufacturer provides a ten-year warrantee
  • 5. savings are two-fold
    • Energy savings
    • The Smart Pack can turn its light off during hours of the night when less or no light is needed (Remote-control programming.)
    • Labor and material cost savings
      • Lamp cycling damage to ballast and igniter is eliminated
      • Eliminates Radio Frequency Interference (RFI)
      • Lamp lifecycle increased
      • L.E.D. makes a faulty lamp easy to spot in the day time
      • Unit installed inside the light fixture (weather protected)
  • 6. Power Savings because less electricity is used
  • 7. Investment Savings because no need to replace photo cells
  • 8. Investment Savings because fewer lamps to replace
  • 9. Labor Savings because fewer lamps need replacement
  • 10. Annual costs & savings based on turning lights off and no cycling & photo control problems
  • 11. The plan: 500 streetlight test
    • Ask one to three utilities to participate in a 500 light fixture test
    • Full service customers are the most desirable candidates for participation in the test
    • Any savings can count towards the requested 10% load reduction
    • BPA pays for the control unit; installation cost is the responsibility of the participating utilities
