History of the Dual Language Program <ul><li>Established SY 2003-2004 in response to changing demographic of school population. </li></ul><ul><li>Dual-Language model chosen to provide same benefits to both language groups: the opportunity to learn a second language. </li></ul><ul><li>Began with Pre-K in 2003 and added a grade each year. Currently being implemented in Headstart thru Grade 4. </li></ul><ul><li>Next year we will serve Pre-K to 5 th grade. </li></ul>

Who Teaches What? <ul><li>Students receive reading and social studies/science instruction from one teacher in English or Spanish and mathematics and writing instruction from the other teacher in the other language. </li></ul><ul><li>The teachers switch </li></ul><ul><li>instructional subjects </li></ul><ul><li>every 5-6 weeks. </li></ul>

How long are class periods? <ul><li>About 2 hours and 15 minutes/ teacher </li></ul><ul><li>Math: about 1 hour </li></ul><ul><li>Writing: about 1 hour </li></ul><ul><li>Reading: about 1.5-2 hours </li></ul><ul><li>Science/Social Studies: ~30-45 min </li></ul><ul><li>Specials: 45-50 minutes daily for Art, Science, Library, Physical Education, or Music </li></ul>

Benefits of Dual Language <ul><li>Research shows that students will: </li></ul><ul><li>score higher on standardized tests after at least 3 years in the program. </li></ul><ul><li>come from diverse backgrounds learning to appreciate a culture different from their own. </li></ul><ul><li>learn a second language at an early age achieving native-like fluency. </li></ul><ul><li>acquire gains in higher order thinking skills. </li></ul><ul><li>have the advantage of being fully prepared for the global community and workforce. </li></ul>
