      • In my opinion, there is no doubt that cell phones will be as common in the classroom as computers are common in the computer lab in schools. At a fraction of the price of laptops, cell phones will cut down on technology costs and will no doubt be just as helpful to students.
      • In the article, it briefly mentioned Verizon Wireless supplying Trinity Meadows School with service and Microsoft supplying the school with training (both as donations). This was surprising to me—I did not expect such large companies to help out in this way. However, I do think they realize their services will greatly benefit our young society.
      • A fact was mentioned early in the article that stated that cell phones are a fraction of what laptops cost. With that said, it should boost the use of cell phones in the classroom. Both devices can provide just about the same services to the user.
      • I was happy to read that such teachers as Matt Cook are finding ways to incorporate phones into their classroom.

      • iPhone apps are still currently being perfected, but the apps will soon be able to send students data immediately.
      • This school uses the iPhone technology created by Stanford University. Here, the students (about 1,000) use the new iPhone application, which was released in the 2009-2010 school year.
      • The app is used to deliver school information by means of cell phones.
      • Another function the school plans to incorporate into the app is a way for teachers to take attendance by using the iPhone.

        • Looking to the future, the developers plan to expand the app to allow students to view/post “academic information, homework assignments, and test schedules (McCrea, 2009, p.2).”
      • Not only are the students using the application, but parents are using it for various reasons (McCrea, 2009):
        • To view online directories
        • To view calendars
        • To view sporting schedules

      • The many uses of the iPhone app for students and teachers seem to be very helpful.
      • Also, because our students are constantly using cell phones, as shown in the previous chart, the app for mobile devices will allow students to access school information quickly and easily.
      • However, one concern would be the accessibility of iPhones to students. Especially in communities with lower socio-economic status, iPhones may not be able to be affordable.
      • The ways parents can also use the app really impressed me. I like how the app developers are including the parents as well, not only the students.
      • The way the app allows students and teachers to post homework assignments, test schedules, etc reminds me of what professors and students do in college. So this use of the app could definitely help future college students become more prepared for their future collegiate classes.
      • A possible function that allows teachers to take attendance by simply using an iPhone really impressed me—no longer will teachers have to click or pencil in who is absent from class.

        • Reflection:
          • Personally, I believe students should partake in the various activities involving cell phones. With so many students owning cell phones and other technological devices, adding software that can only help them should be used.
      • The fact that educators are leaning toward the use of cell phones, which is usually prohibited, amazes me.
      • The fact that mobile devices are going to be the new “paper and pencil” in the future tells me that we are going in the right direction with the integration of cell phones in the classroom.
      • The percentages of the number of students who own cell phones astonishes me, and it shows that this society is becoming more and more technologically savvy at a young age. We need to keep up with the ever-changing technology.

      • From looking at the articles previously described, it seems the use of cell phones can only help students understand.
      • Also, cell phones can also cut down costs of computers for schools.
      • Cell phones allow students to obtain school information quickly and efficiently. In addition, students can spend time outside of school on school.
      • Some schools that are located in poorer areas of the country may not be able to afford such devices.
      • Cell phones are usually small and contain small print—this may cause a problem for those with sight disabilities.
      • Cell phones in the classroom could cause a distraction if students are not watched carefully by their instructors; this may be difficult to detect for teachers.
