Working for Justice in Australia - Presentation Transcript

    1. Homeless people in Australia By Paulos Gannos & Timolester Wylie
      • In 2001 Australia was home to 99,900 homeless people. 42% of this statistic were females, 58% were alone, 19% were couples and 23% were families.
      • Out of the 99,900 homeless people only 14,251 people were recorded to be staying in services funded by the government.
    2. How would you like to spend your nights on the street?
    3. Going to sleep every night in the cold!
    4. Fighting for shelter and warmth every day!!!
    5. Government Response
      • The government is trying their best with the aid of charitable organizations to eradicate homelessness in Australia.
      • Homeless shelters are usually operated by a non-profit agency or a municipal agency, or are associated with a church. Many get at least part of their funding from local government entities.
    6. Church Response
      • The catholic church joins forces with the government by providing aid and services towards housing commissions and free café’s.
      • The church also helps in the collecting of clothes, presents and foods to give to people that are not as well off as others. Organizations such as St. Vincent De Paul have big bins used to collect second hand gifts and then they are relayed to the people in need.
    7. School Response
      • At Holy Spirit College we are determined to eradicate the issue of struggling families and homelessness by providing winter appeal cloths so people that can’t afford new cloths have some warm clothes for winter.
      • Also we are in the current process of collecting food and raising money to give to those who are struggling through our current times.
