Advantages of Earning a Specialist High Skills Major in FORESTRY Ontario is blessed with vast, sustainable, managed forests, the foundation of a thriving forest products industry that manufactures high-quality products for world markets. The forest industry provides direct and indirect employment to over 200 000 people across the province. At present, there is a severe shortage of skilled forestry workers and entry-level wages are higher than those for most of the registered trades. Students also have the option to study forestry at college and university. The SHSM Forestry enables students to build a foundation of sector-focused knowledge and skills before graduating and entering a postsecondary destination, whether it be apprenticeship training, college, university, or an entry-level position in the workplace.
Advantages of Earning a Specialist High Skills Major in the ENVIRONMENT Canada is the second largest country in the world, with an area of almost 10 million square kilometers. Although rich in natural resources, we are facing many issues related to the environment, including global warming, species at risk, air and water quality concerns, and resource depletion. Employment in the environment sector has boomed in recent years and existing labour shortages in this sector are only expected to increase as regulations to meet Canada’s goals regarding climate change, endangered species and source water protection among others, come into effect. The SHSM Environment provides a wide variety of environment-based activities and research, as well as sector-specific certifications, directly related to careers in the environmental field.
WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO CONSIDER SHSM IN GRADE 10? The 9 courses required for the SHSM happen across BOTH grades 11 and 12 If interested in NOS or NERDS you need to plan for them and your other courses – sometimes there is a waiting list! NOS can be taken in Grade 11 or 12, but NERDS is normally only taken in Grade 12 Your English and Math teachers in Grades 11 and 12 need to know if you are on an SHSM pathway
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN NOS AND NERDS? NORTHERN OUTDOOR STUDIES IS MORE WORKPLACE ORIENTED – YOU OBTAIN FOUR “E” CREDITS AND LOTS OF INDUSTRY RECOGNIZED CERTIFICATIONS. NORTHERN ENVIRONMENTAL RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT STUDIES IS GEARED TO COLLEGE AND UNIVERSITY BOUND STUDENTS. YOU OBTAIN FOUR “M” CREDITS AND CERTIFICATIONS NECESSARY FOR WORKING IN THE FIELD.
