The current student service fee is $15 of which the athletic department receives $4. The initiative would add a separate fee specifically for the athletic department and the $4 portion of the student service fee would no longer go to the athletic department. If more than 50 percent of the students support the initiative then campus administration would need to draft the legislation that would go to the state legislature for adoption. Voting was scheduled from March 10 to March 11 however it was postponed at the last minute because of a temporary injunction filed by the UTEP Student Government Association Supreme Court. The election code requires an election commission to oversee the voting process and one had not been established for this initiative. This would be an increase of about 54%.
This level of recognition brings more opportunities to the University and the City. A well funded athletic department would entice good athletes and coaches thus leading to successful sporting seasons and overwhelming support from the El Paso community.Although the Campus Life and Athletics Enhancement Initiative seem to be for the benefit of the athletic department, their lack of communication has led students to believe that the initiative will not benefit them.
