What was the Great Depression?  The Great Depression began on "Black Tuesday" with the Wall Street Crash in October 1929 and rapidly spread worldwide.  The market crash marked the beginning of a decade of high unemployment, poverty, low profits, deflation, plunging farm incomes, and lost opportunities for economic growth and personal advancement.

  7. 7. Franklin Roosevelt and The New Deal In 1933 Franklin D. Roosevelt became the president of the United State. FDR came up with a New Deal policy to help get America out of the Great Depression. Some programs created under the New Deal are still around today: Social Security, National Recovery Administration, and Securities and Exchange Commissions.
