    2. Al-Qaeda
      • Al Qaeda is “The Base” in Arabic.
      • Al Qaeda is one of the largest and effective terrorist organizations in the world.
      • It is best known for the catastrophic attacks on the World Trade Centre, killing nearly 3000 people.
      • The US reaction was to declare a “War on Terror” against Al-Qaeda, which has left the group in disarray.
    3. Where is Al-Qaeda based?
      • Al Qaeda is based mainly in the middle east, but also have bases in overseas locations.
      • Its main stronghold is the cave networks on the Afghan-Pakistani border
      • This labryinth of caves is the only thing stopping Al-Qaedas middle east headquaters being destroyed
    4. Origins and History of Al-Qaeda
      • Al-Qaeda is thought to have started in the late 1980s’ by Osama Bin Laden and Abdullah Azzam.
      • Hundreds of mujhadeen where recruited and trained in the early stages of the group
      • The group is an Islamist extremist group, with goals of ending foreign influence in the Middle east and achieving a worldwide Islamist government
    5. LEADERS OF THE ORGANIZATION
    6. Osama Bin Laden
      • Osama Bin Laden is believed to be the founder and leader of Al-Qaeda.
      • Bin Laden is thought to have masterminded the September 11 attacks and many others
      • He’s current location is hotly debated as is his ‘death’.
    7. Ayman al-Zawahiri
      • Zawahiri is thought to be second in command of Al-Qaeda.
      • He is Osama Bin Ladens ‘Ideological’ advisor
      • Originally he was the leader of the Egyptian Islamist Jihad, he merged the group into Al-Qaeda.
    8. Notable Attacks
      • New York City attack of 2001
      • Madrid bombing of 2004
      • London bombings of 2005
    9. Due to the War on Terror, Al Qaeda has become destabilized and decentralized. This means they no longer play as big a part in World Terrorism as they once did.
