  2. 3. What is Gear Up? <ul><li>Gear Up is a discretionary grant funded through a United States Department of Education designed to increase the number of low-income students who are prepared to enter and succeed in postsecondary education. </li></ul>
  3. 4. <ul><li>ENMU-Roswell was awarded a six-year grant in 2005 to provide supportive services and programs for Roswell, Hagerman, Dexter, and Lake Arthur school districts. The Program targets and tracks a cohort group of students who began as sixth and seventh graders in 2005-2006. </li></ul>What is the history of the ENMU-Roswell Gear Up program?

What does Gear Up do? <ul><li>ENMU-Roswell GearUp Program provides educational services and cultural opportunities to the same group (cohort) of students for a period of six years. </li></ul><ul><li>GearUp will continue to provide services to the same cohort until 2011. At that time, one group of students will be in their first year of college and the other will be high school seniors. </li></ul>

Tutoring Programs <ul><li>GearUp tutors reflect high standards of the GearUp Program: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Respect for others </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>High academic standards </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Confidentiality </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Teamwork </li></ul></ul>The tutoring program is an important part of the GearUp Program.

Academic & Career Counseling <ul><li>Gear Up provides academic and career counseling. </li></ul><ul><li>Every ninth grade student has </li></ul><ul><li>had an opportunity to participate in </li></ul><ul><li>GearUp Career Day. </li></ul><ul><li>Area community leaders in health </li></ul><ul><li>services, business, social services, </li></ul><ul><li>technology, and government </li></ul><ul><li>share their talents and expertise </li></ul><ul><li>with students. </li></ul>

  14. 15. ACT ONLINE PREPARATION Chaves County high school students now have access to the ACT Online Prep School Edition. Gear Up acquired site licenses for Dexter, Hagerman, Goddard, Lake Arthur, and Roswell High School. ACT Online Prep will provide GearUp students comprehensive content review for each of the ACT's four required tests— English, Math, Reading, and Science . For more information, students may contact their high school counselor.
  15. 16.   GEARUP PROVIDES LEARNING TECHNOLOGY FOR SCHOOLS <ul><li>Gear Up purchased and provided training to local middle school teachers on a new system designed to improve student classroom learning. Known as “clicker systems”, the Classroom Performance System (CPS) enhances the teaching and learning environment. </li></ul><ul><li>Current research shows the benefits of these ‘clicker systems’ include: </li></ul><ul><li>Increased class attendance </li></ul><ul><li>An opportunity for instructors to identify and intervene early when students are not performing well </li></ul><ul><li>Ability to poll student on various issues </li></ul><ul><li>Identify misconceptions and levels of understanding </li></ul>GEAR U Page Gear Up recently provided training to local middle school teachers on a new system designed to improve student classroom learning. Known as “clicker systems” these Classroom Performance Systems () allow each student to use a remote device to answer questions posed by the instructor from a PowerPoint pres <ul><li>pative learning environment. With the ‘clicker systems’, summaries of student responses can be shown in real-time to instructors and/or students. Answers are stored electronically for later review.” </li></ul><ul><li>Current research shows the benefits of these ‘clicker systems’ include: </li></ul><ul><li>Increased class attendance </li></ul>classroom mentoring and instruction techniques unique to Gear Up target students. Training includes the STAR Reading Program and Explicit Instruction. Superintendent of Dexter Schools, Patricia Parsons stated, “ We have For the past two years, Gear Up has contracted with Dr. Sharon Gatti-Carson to provide professional development services to Gear Up instructors in Dexter schools. Dr. Gatti-Carson provides instructors with School students worked with Harvest Ministries throughout the year. Students helped every Thursday by measuring and bagging over three hundred pounds of flour and rice. They also bagged potatoes, onions, and packed food boxes. Gear Up staff rewarded these dedicated students for their hard work by providing them dinner and a trip to ‘Christmas on the Pecos’ in Carlsbad.
