Part III– Multimedia Thematic Project Teaching Presentations Lesson 1: Online Research Katie Reimann University of Phoenix CMP 555 Professor Kelly Gentry December 14, 2008
Introduction
The following thematic lesson is based upon an important part of my curriculum and is constantly a work in progress when is comes to teaching middle school students about the writing process and writing research essays.
Using the ASSURE Model
A=Analyze learners
S=State Objectives
S=Select Methods, Media, and Materials
U=Utilize Materials
R=Require Learner Participation
E=Evaluate and Revise
A=Analyze learners
Middle school aged students of all learning styles
Filled with gifted students, students with learning disabilities, and average students all within the language arts/ writer’s workshop environment
A=Analyze learners
Kinesthetic, mobility, cooperative learning groups, and individual accountability all need to be integrated
Very diverse in learning styles and ability levels
S=State Objectives
ABCD Method
A-Sixth grade students will use multi-media to research a subject-a famous person who made a positive impact in our world.
B –Read and evaluate online, text, and media resources about the lives of their chosen subject.
S=State Objectives
C– Document their findings on a chart graphic organizer listing what answers were found and from what source.
D- Work independently at various media stations in the school’s learning resource center to find the answers to the 10 essential questions they posed to find through research.
S=Select Methods, Media, and Materials
-Classroom, learning resource center (LRC), and public libraries
Resource books collected for use in the classroom and on hold in the LRC for additional background information on subjects
S=Select Methods, Media, and Materials
Internet search engines to find more information on subjects
Graphic organizers for each student with a column of all the selected resources and a row of questions they came up with to answer along the top
U=Utilize Materials
Microsoft Office Suite and the Internet
Collectively students are proficient using technology
Practice responsible use of technology systems, information, and software to complete graphic organization of findings from research activities
Develop positive attitudes toward technology uses that support learning and productivity.
U=Utilize Materials
Students use technology to locate, evaluate, and collect information for their graphic organizer and ultimately their research essay
Students will evaluate online resources for valid and invalid information
Students will determine the structure of nonfiction resources
R=Require Learner Participation
The student will be evaluated on their participation and behavior at the learning centers, and the completeness of their graphic organizer
Participation and behavior rubric will be completed by the student first as a self-evaluation, then by teacher at the end of each work day
R=Require Learner Participation Work Day 3 Work Day 2 Work Day 1 1 -3 or more warnings given to stay on task -was not productive in completing your graphic organizer -apparent that you did not try today 2 -1 to 2 warnings given to stay on task -was somewhat productive in completing your graphic organizer -apparent that you put a little effort in today 3 -No warnings given to stay on task -was very productive in completing your graphic organizer -apparent that you tried your best today
E=Evaluate and Revise
Challenged in different methods through the use of technology
Engaging on many levels, has technology components, and reaches the needs of students of all learning abilities
E=Evaluate and Revise
Students will be assessed by a variety of means
informal observation during the work time and implementing a participation and behavior rubric
completion and responses to their posed research questions on their graphic organizer.
Conclusion
Through this thematic lesson, students are gaining a sense of awareness of others’ positive contributions to the world AND practicing technical skills required for success in the real world
