what is MSC?

  Mobile Switching Center (MSC)
  Combines of MSC-S & M-MGw
  Responsible for:
    – Routing traffic and
    – Signaling information in the network

  Some functions:
    – Call control management (Registration,..)
    – Mobility management (Location update,
      handover, call routing,…)

What is GMSC?

  Gateway MSC (GMSC)
  Interface with fixed network (PSTN/ISDN)
  Retrieve information form HLR for location of
  sub.
  Route all calls to appropriate MSC/VLR
  Also perform charging for mobile terminate call

What is HLR/AuC?

  Home Location Register (HLR)
  Centralized database of subscriber
    – Administrative information
    – Subscriber registration
    – Any supplementary services

  Authentication Center (AuC)
    – Ciphering
    – User authentication

  Visitor Location Register (VLR)
  Database for both subscriber
  information and

  Information relates to MSC in
  service area
  One VLR for each MSC

What is SAU, PDP, SDS?
                                          HLR Subscriber
  SAU
    –   Stand for Simultaneously
        Attached Users                    GSM/WCDMA
    –   Subscriber attached to the            Sub
        network
  PDP                                       Packet Sub
    –   Packet Data Protocol
    –   Data structure present for both
        SGSN/GGSN
    –   Contains subscriber’s session          SAU
        information (Active user)
    –   Information such as IP address,
        IMSI, Subscriber tunnel ID
                                               SDS
  SDS
    –   Simultaneous Data Session
    –   Can be a PDP or more
                                               PDP

Mobile Switching Center (MSC) Combines of MSC-S & M-MGw Responsible for: – Routing traffic and – Signaling information in the network Some functions: – Call control management (Registration,..) – Mobility management (Location update, handover, call routing,…) 7
  • 8. Circuit Switch Overview-Cont’ What is GMSC? Gateway MSC (GMSC) Interface with fixed network (PSTN/ISDN) Retrieve information form HLR for location of sub. Route all calls to appropriate MSC/VLR Also perform charging for mobile terminate call 8
  • 9. Circuit Switch Overview-Cont’ What is HLR/AuC? Home Location Register (HLR) Centralized database of subscriber – Administrative information – Subscriber registration – Any supplementary services Authentication Center (AuC) – Ciphering – User authentication 9

HLR Subscriber SAU – Stand for Simultaneously Attached Users GSM/WCDMA – Subscriber attached to the Sub network PDP Packet Sub – Packet Data Protocol – Data structure present for both SGSN/GGSN – Contains subscriber’s session SAU information (Active user) – Information such as IP address, IMSI, Subscriber tunnel ID SDS SDS – Simultaneous Data Session – Can be a PDP or more PDP 12
