For the genre, I decided to put three types that I am familiar with and will enjoy basing my magazine on. Unfortunately ‘Other’ was the most popular answer and so I will base my magazine on the second most popular answer which was vintage rock. I considered including a wider variety to select from however if I were to have an unfamiliar genre as the most popular genre, it would be difficult to base a magazine on a topic that I personally do not enjoy or have any knowledge on.
What is your most preferred type of artists?
I decided to base one of my questions on what type of artists my audience would prefer to listen to. However I did not use artist names as I believed this will make the choice too much of a specific and narrow option. The highest answer was solo artists and so I will consider featuring solo artists in my magazine.
What types of articles are you interested in?
I wanted to find out what my audience enjoys reading as this will be a large part of creating a magazine and so I included a question asking what types of articles people would be interested in reading. I put three main topics, ‘Interviews’, ‘Event Information’ and ‘Competitions’. I selected these three specific categories as they are commonly featured in music magazines and they are also three topics that I would find interesting to write about. The most popular answer was Interviews and I was pleased with this result as it was the topic that I would have most enjoyed writing about. I now know that I will include articles in my magazine as this is what people enjoy reading the most.
What is your most preferred publication frequency?
I asked what publication frequency people preferred out of weekly and monthly as these are the most common publication frequencies. It was also an important aspect to find out as the length and information would be completely different depending on the publication frequency. Weekly was the most popular answer and so I will consider making my magazine link closely to current news and to date.
How much will you be willing to pay for a music magazine?
£2.50 (Likely to be weekly and lower quality of printing) - 8 people
£3.50 (Thicker magazine with higher quality printing, can be monthly) - 12 people
I decided to put two price ranges that are similar to the prices of magazines that are currently on the market. I also decided to add some detail explaining briefly what the quality of the magazine would be depending on the price. I found this was an important part as otherwise; people would be more likely to choose the lower price. As a result, the most popular answer was £3.50. This will allow my magazine to have a wider budget which will affect many qualities such as high quality printing, interviews with higher status celebrities and even perhaps a free gift that can come with the magazine.
Do you ready any of these music magazines currently?
I asked if any people were reading popular music magazines that are currently on the market; I included NME, Kerrang and Q. I wanted to find this out so that I could research other magazines for Ideas and Inspiration that I could in cooperate in my own magazine. The two most popular answers out of the magazines were Kerrang and Q. I will consider using research from these magazines and also doing a cover analysis on one of the magazines.
Preferred magazine title
I wanted to find out what kind of magazine titles will attract my audience and so I put a choice of six possible titles that people can choose from. I made most of the titles music related and also included one title ‘Fuji’ that is a part of my surname. ‘Fuji’ was in fact the most popular answer and when I asked some of the respondents to why they had chosen the title, I received feedback saying that it was ‘catchy’ and bold. I found this was an important quality as the title must be memorable and bold in order to attract customers to the magazine.
What is your preferred Masthead font? TRASHCO CAPTURE IT Sketch Rockwell SideWalk IMPACT LABEL In order for my masthead to stand out, it was important to have a font that people liked and were drawn to. I put six possible fonts that people could choose from. I made sure that I would be pleased to use any of them and that they would all suit the genre of my music magazine. My most popular answer was ‘CAPTURE IT’ and I am pleased with the result as the font is bold, eye catching and would compliment my choice of genre.
18 and above
Finding out the age of my respondents was an important aspect of the questionnaire as this would determine my target market. Being in a sixth form college, nearly all my respondents were aged 16-18. My target market will now be for this particular age group and so I will consider using informal language such as slang and will make my magazine bold and youthful.
I made sure to ask the same amount of males and females as I wanted my magazine to be aimed at a unisex audience. I also made sure to ask the same amount of males and females as this will keep the data reliable and will avoid having an unequal amount of answers that could be more likely to be chosen depending on the sex of the respondent.
